Men’s 200 fly
After coming up just short of tracking down Michael Phelps in the 100 fly last night, California’s Tom Shields looks strong heading into finals of the 200-meter fly.
Shields turned in a top time of 1:59.36 this morning, and should drop time tonight. He’s likely looking to move past Tyler Clary as the top American in the stroke this year. Clary owns that distinction with a 1:58.29 from the Austin stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series.
Gator’s Sebastien Rousseau qualified second in 2:00.10 with 400 IM winner Chase Kalisz qualifying third in 2:00.41.
Brazil’s Marco Oliveira (2:00.75), Bobby Bollier (2:00.93), Nashville’s Dakota Hodgson (2:01.03), California’s Adam Hinshaw (2:01.83) and Club Wolverine’s Michael Flach (2:02.21) also made the championship heat.

Belarus’ Aliaksandra Herasimenia qualified second in a time of 25.30, while Wisconsin’s Ivy Martin qualified just behind in third with a 25.31 to set up what could be a special battle in finals.
SwimMAC’s Madison Kennedy (25.46), Brazil’s Gracie Herrmann (25.69), California’s Natalie Coughlin (25.81), Fiat Minas’ Daiane Becker (25.89) and Canada’s Victoria Poon (25.89) also made the finale.
Lili Ibanez Lopez, swimming under the FINA flag due to the suspension of the Mexican Swimming Federation, qualified ninth in 25.93.

California’s Nathan Adrian, who is in a battle with Michael Phelps for the series points lead, hit the wall in 22.03 to lead qualifying this morning. That’s not far off his fourth-ranked season best of 21.85 from the Austin stop.
Florida’s Caeleb Dressel, who stunned the world with a blistering 18.23 in the 50-yard free during SECs last month, qualified second in 22.52. That’s a second off his personal best of 21.53 to take gold at the 2015 U.S. National Championships.
Italy’s Luca Dotto qualified third in 22.54 with Ali Khalafalla of Indiana snagging fourth in 22.56.
Brazil’s Italo Duarte (22.57), Tucson Ford’s Brad Tandy (22.63), Wolfpack’s Caleb Weir (22.66) and Brazil’s Cesar Cielo (22.67) rounded out the top eight.
Brazil’s Bruno Fratus, ranked fifth in the world with a 22.07 from Austin, surprisingly finished ninth with a 22.71 this morning and will swim in the B final barring a scratch.

Men’s 100 back
California’s Ryan Murphy smoked prelims with a time of 53.88. That’s just off his fourth-ranked season best of 53.46 from the Austin stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series.
Murphy has some time to drop to challenge the top-seeded time of 52.85 by Mitch Larkin in Australia, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
Grigory Tarasevich qualified second in 54.24 to move to ninth in the world, while Brazil’s Guilherme Guido put up a 54.64 for the third seed.
California’s Jacob Pebley (54.81) and Wolfpack’s Eugene Godsoe (55.15) turned in the fourth and fifth seeds.
NBAC’s Michael Phelps, coming on a big win in the 100 fly last night, cruised into sixth overall with a 55.19 in an event that is not one of his specialties.
Tucson Ford’s Matt Grevers, ranked second in the world with a 53.35 from Austin, eased his way into the A final with a seventh-ranked 55.27, while former Russian Olympian Arkady Vyatchanin, now swimming for Serbia, put up an eighth-ranked 55.74.

Men’s 200 breast
Josh Prenot turned in the top time of the morning with a time of 2:13.41. He’s been much faster with a fourth-ranked 2:10.26 from the Austin stop.
Georgia’s Nic Fink raced his way to second with a 2:13.43, well back of his sixth-ranked time of 2:10.51 also from Austin.
Badger’s Cody Miller, likely swimming a bit more carefully after a monster 100-meter breast disqualification from last night cost him a 59.94 and a win, qualified third in 2:14.24.
NBAC’s Chase Kalisz (2:15.39), Cardinals’ Thomas Dahlia (2:16.07), California’s Sean Mahoney (2:16.97), Gator’s Dan Wallace (2:17.43) and Ridge Altman (2:17.62) also made the top eight.
NBAC’s Michael Phelps, swimming the most odd double possible from his typical events, qualified 15th in the 200 breast with a 2:20.84 after making the A final of the 100 back.

NBAC’s Lotte Friis turned in the top time of the morning with a 4:11.63. That swim is well off her eighth-ranked season best of 4:07.18 from the Austin stop, but she didn’t need that type of speed with world-record holder Katie Ledecky focusing on off events here in Orlando.
Badger’s Lindsay Vrooman clocked in with a second-seeded time of 4:12.35 with Gator’s Andreina Pinto Perez qualifying third in 4:13.00.
Brazil’s Manuella Lyrio (4:13.07), Minnesota’s Kiera Janzen (4:13.10), Upper Valley’s Hannah Cox (4:13.27), NBAC’s Cierra Runge (4:13.28) and NBAC’s Allison Schmitt (4:13.47) also are slated to swim in the A final.
