2021 Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 4 Prelims: Michigan Trying to Make Move on OSU (With Up-Mid-Downs)

The 2021 Big Ten Women’s Championships continued on Friday with the Day 4 prelims from Minneapolis.

The events are the 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 fly and platform diving.

Ohio State still has a sizeable lead, but with two days left, Michigan is still in striking distance, while Indiana and Northwestern are also swimming well.

Big Ten Women’s 100 Backstroke

Wisconsin freshman Phoebe Bacon started the session out with a fast swim in the 100 backstroke. Bacon touched the wall in 52.22, a little slower than her seed time, but that is to be expected in the prelims.

Two other swimmers were sub-53 as Ohio State junior Emily Crane took the second seed in 52.61 and Wisconsin junior Mara Newman was third at 52.90.

Northwestern junior Miriam Guevara took the fourth seed (53.10), followed by Michigan sophomore Mariella Venter (53.23), Northwestern sophomore Emma Lepisova (53.30), Penn State junior Marie Schobel (53.46) and Minnesota senior Emily Cook (53.52).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Breaststroke

Ohio State sophomore Hannah Bach dropped four seconds from her seed time to take the top seed in the 100 breaststroke.

Bach touched the wall in 58.40, an NCAA “A” cut, to hold off the field by nearly a second.

Northwestern sophomore Hannah Brunzell took the second seed in 59.44,  just one hundredth of a second ahead of senior teammate Sophie Angus (50.45).

Indiana sophomore Emily Weiss took the fourth seed in 59.61, ahead of junior teammate Noelle Peplowski (59.93).

Michigan State senior Erin Szara took the sixth seed in 100.30, followed by Ohio State senior Hannah Gresser (1:00.47) and sophomore teammate Leah Baker (1:00.60).

Big Ten Women’s 200 Butterfly

Michigan made a huge move in the 200 fly, placing four in the top eight, including three of the top four seeds to close out the swimming prelims on Friday.

Junior Olivia Carter took the top seed in 1:53.61, nearly three seconds ahead of the field.

Northwestern junior Miriam Guevara, pulling a Friday double, took the second seed in 1:56.12.

Michigan freshman Sophie Housey (1:57.41) took the third seed, followed by junior teammate Victoria Kwan (1:57.55).

Wisconsin senior Alex Reddington took the fifth spot in 1:57.88, followed by Iowa freshman Alyssa Graves (1:58.49), Ohio State senior Katherine Trace (1:58.76) and Michigan sophomore Megan Glass (1:58.82).
