Women’s 200 fly

SwimMAC’s Cammile Adams took the top seed in the morning with a 2:09.81.  She finished more than two seconds ahead of the rest of the field, and should have an easy time of it this evening.

The big question is whether she can challenge her top January time ever, which happens to be the record for this month.  Here in Austin in 2012, she posted a sizzling 2:06.76.

NCAP’s Cassidy Bayer turned in a second-seeded time of 2:11.99 with Kentucky’s Christina Bechtel taking third in 2:12.18.

Chattahoochee Gold’s Lauren Case (2:12.32), Texas A&M’s Sarah Gibson (2:12.71), HPCO’s Audrey Lacroix (2:12.85), Razorback’s Taylor Pike (2:13.44) and Dakota Luther (2:13.49) rounded out the top eight.

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu shockingly failed to even make the top eight and is looking at swimming in the consolation heat after finishing ninth this morning with a 2:13.51.

Men’s 200 fly

SwimMAC’s Tyler Clary turned in the top time of the morning in the 200 fly with a time of 1:58.29.

He will definitely face a challenge from Sweden’s Simon Sjodin tonight as Sjoding qualified second in 1:58.66.

Singapore’s Zheng Wen Quah also cleared 2:00 with a third-place time of 1:59.44.

HPCO’s Zack Chetrat (2:00.54), Andrew Seliskar (2:00.55), Great Britain’s Jay Lelliott (2:00.69), California’s Tom Shields (2:00.72) and Club Wolverine’s Michael Klueh (2:00.88) will also compete in the championship eight.

Michael Phelps elected to scratch from this event this morning.

Women’s 100 breast

SoFlo’s Alia Atkinson and SwimMAC’s Katie Meili turned up the heat this morning in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke.

Atkinson clocked a top-seeded time of 1:07.38, while Meili posted a 1:07.92 for the second seed.

Both finished in the top five last year with Meili ranking third with a 1:05.64, while Atkinson owned a 1:05.93 for fourth overall.

The two will need those types of times to challenge the record for the top January swim ever.  Leisel Jones clocked a 1:05.71 at the 2006 Australian Commonwealth Games Trials for that time.

NYAC’s Breeja Larson (1:08.45) and BlueFish’s Laura Sogar (1:08.64) qualified third and fourth.

Tennessee’s Molly Hannis (1:08.72), Golden West’s Jessica Hardy (1:08.77), LASC’s Rachel Nicol (1:08.96) and Gator’s Hilda Luthersdottir (1:08.96) also qualified for the A final.

Men’s 100 breast

Longhorn’s Andrew Wilson, one of the breakout stars of the U.S. Nationals last summer with a 59.65, led the way this morning in 1:00.36.

Wilson might just have it in the tank to challenge the all time January record of 59.48 set by Adam Peaty at the 2015 Speedo Cup.

Kevin Cordes qualified second in 1:00.87 with Missouri’s Sam Tierney posting a third-seeded 1:01.22.

Athens Bulldog’ Nic Fink (1:01.63), Indie’s Michael Andrew (1:01.63), HPCO’s Richard Funk (1:01.79), California’s Chuck Katis (1:02.16) and Great Britain’s James Wilby (1:02.44) also made the top eight.

Women’s 100 back

Colorado Stars’ Missy Franklin turned in the top time of the morning as she is among one of the most loaded fields heading into tonight.

Franklin topped qualifying in 1:00.22, while SwimMAC’s Kirsty Coventry qualified second in 1:00.61.

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu (1:00.64) and Oakville’s Dominique Bouchard (1:00.89) qualified third and fourth, while California’s Kathleen Baker also cleared 1:01 with a fifth-seeded 1:00.94.

Stanford’s Maya DiRado (1:01.12), California’s Rachel Bootsma (1:01.16) and Missouri’s Hannah Stevens (1:01.23) are also slated to compete in the finale.

It’s doubtful that anyone will rival the top January swim ever of 58.89 clocked by Emily Seebohm at last year’s BHP Aquatic Super Series.

NYAC’s David Plummer clocked a swift top time of 53.88 this morning, putting him within a second of the top January time ever.

Ryosuke Irie owns that record with a 53.15 from last year’s BHP Aquatic Super Series.

Tucson Ford’s Matt Grevers qualified second in 54.12 with Ryan Murphy posting a third-seeded time of 54.29.

Club Wolverine’s Junya Koga (54.80), NYAC’s Arkady Vyatchanin (54.97), SwimMAC’s Tyler Clary (55.40), St. Thomas’ Rex Tullius (55.45) and N.C. State’s Hennessey Stuart (55.59) also managed to make their way into the top eight.

Women’s 200 IM

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, the world-record holder in the event, cruised to the top seed with a 2:12.38.

Hosszu likely won’t have much competition tonight, but she will need to drop some major time to challenge the top January time ever of 2:09.67 set by Ye Shiwen back at the 2013 BHP Super Series event.

Aggie’s Sarah Henry qualified second in 2:13.54 and will need to ratchet up the speed to catch Hosszu tonight.

Texas’ Madisyn Cox (2:13.59), Texas A&M’s Sydney Pickrem (2:14.30), SwimMAC’s Kirsty Coventry (2:14.43), Saint Petersburg’s Melanie Margalis (2:14.63), NCAP’s Katie Ledecky (2:15.10) and Great Britain’s Georgia Coates (2:15.22) also made the finale.

Ledecky continues to swim a busy meet, and still has the women’s 800-meter free later today.

Men’s 200 IM

Michael Phelps continued his strong meet with a smooth 2:01.88 to lead the way in the 200-meter IM.

Phelps has been beating all of his January career bests this week, and has a shot at another one tonight.  His best time ever in January came in 2012 at this meet with a 1:58.52.

Phelps should cut some time tonight, but the question is whether he can cut that much.

Andrew Seliskar cruised into second overall with a 2:02.47, while Josh Prenot placed third out of the morning heats with a 2:02.59.

Gator’s Dan Wallace qualified fourth in 2:02.78 with Wisconsin’s Michael Weiss snaring fifth in 2:02.83.

SwimMAC’s Ryan Lochte, who had a strong 400 IM last night, posted a sixth-seeded time in 2:03.06.

Gator’s Niki Denisyako (2:03.43) and Gator’s Eduardo Solaeche (2:03.70) picked up the rest of the top times.
