5 Top Takeaways From The ACC This Weekend

By Chandler Brandes, ACC Beat Writer

It was a busy weekend for the Atlantic Coast Conference with 11 teams competing as they prepare for the 2016 ACC Championships. The women’s meet begins Feb. 17 in Greensboro, while the men’s meet starts on Feb. 24.

5 Top Takeaways:

1. Wolfpack Men Set the Stage for ACCs
The No. 8 NC State men made a statement this past weekend, beating No. 19 North Carolina and No. 21 Virginia. The 2015 ACC Champions won the 200 medley relay by over a second and dominated the field in the 400 free relay, winning by nearly four seconds. Anton Ipsen and Adam Linker went 1-2, respectively, in both the 1000 and 500, while Simonas Bilis and Ryan Held took the top two spots in the 50 free. They also swept the 200 IM, showing how much depth their team has. The Wolfpack men will look to carry this momentum leading into the ACC Championships.

2. Record Setting Weekend for Georgia Tech Divers
Two Yellow Jacket divers set a total of three program records as they swept Emory on Saturday. Shannon Lumbra, who was awarded the ACC Female Diver of the Week last weekend, set new team records in both the 1m (321.15) and 3m (340.65), winning each event by a considerable margin. Brad Homza also rewrote the record books in the men’s 1m (379.20), and they will each pose as a threat on both boards heading into Championship season.

3. North Carolina Sets Six Pool Records
Rachel Canty (100 breast), Kendall Surhoff (400 IM), Hellen Moffitt (100 fly), Nic Graesser (100 back), and Sam Lewis (100 fly), as well as the women’s 200 free relay, set a total of six new Taishoff pool records while on the road at Duke. The No. 14 Tar Heel women and the No. 19 men defeated the Blue Devils, and Moffitt showed her versatility by winning three individual events. This puts the Tar Heels in a good position as they look to continue their success heading into Championships.

4. Coombs Victorious for Florida State
Jason Coombs
was the only event winner for the Seminoles as both the men and women fell to No. 7/No. 11 Auburn and No. 17 Wisconsin. The junior dominated the field in the men’s 200 breast (1:59.41), taking the top spot by nearly three seconds. He also placed second in the 100 breast (53.77). His 200 breast was one of the fastest times in the ACC this weekend.

5. Pitt Divers Dominate on Boards
Continuing their success throughout the season, the Panther divers showed their dominance on both boards as Pitt competed against Carnegie Mellon, California (Pa.), Clarion, and Duquesne. Dominic Giordano won both the men’s 1m and 3m, with teammate Tony Galante taking second in both. Meme Sharp led the Panthers to a sweep in the women’s 1m, and also won the 3m with teammate Samantha Winkelmann placing second. The Panther divers will aim to continue their success as they face tougher competition at ACCs.
