Hellen Moffitt Wins Three As North Carolina Sweeps Duke

After hosting Virginia and NC State on Friday, North Carolina travelled to the Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion on Saturday to compete against Duke. The Tar Heel women beat the Blue Devils 179-121, while the men beat Duke 156-142.

Both the Blue Devil women (1:37.91) and men (1:29.03) started off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay.

North Carolina’s Hellen Moffitt was a triple event winner. Moffitt won the women’s 100 back (54.16) and 200 back (1:57.54), as well as the 100 fly (53.29), establishing a new pool record.

Duke’s Verity Abel won the women’s 1000 (10:00.47) and 500 free (4:52.05). Duke’s Matt Johnson won the men’s 1000 (9:08.00), breaking his own team record.

North Carolina swept the women’s 200 free, led by Lauren Earp (1:49.05). They also swept the women’s 100 free, won by Allyn Hardesty (50.10), and the women’s 400 IM, led by Kendall Surhoff (4:19.80), which broke the Taishoff pool record.

North Carolina’s Mitch Deforest won the men’s 200 free (1:39.03) and 500 free (4:30.24). The Tar Heels’ Nic Graesser broke the pool record in the men’s 100 back (48.40) and won the 200 back (1:47.92).

Duke swept the men’s 100 breast, led by Peter Kropp (54.16). Kropp also won the 200 breast (2:01.64). Rachel Canty broke the pool record in the women’s 100 breast (1:01.68) and won the 200 breast (2:15.96) for North Carolina.

Duke’s Isa Paez won the women’s 200 fly (1:59.81), while North Carolina’s Matthew Conway won the men’s 200 fly (1:47.59).

Duke’s Maddie Rusch won the women’s 50 free (22.80), which set a new pool record. Duke’s James Peek won the men’s 50 free (20.23), while North Carolina’s Logan Heck won the men’s 100 free (44.85).

Other North Carolina event winners included Sam Lewis in the men’s 100 fly (47.32) and Eugene Tee in the men’s 400 IM (3:58.08). Lewis’ 100 fly set a new pool record.

Mack Willborn won the women’s 1m (295.28) for Duke, while North Carolina’s Elissa Dawson dove to first in the 3m (360.75). North Carolina’s Jack Nyquist swept both the men’s 1m (359.55) and 3m (444.75).

The meet concluded with the Tar Heel women winning and setting a new Taishoff pool record in the 200 free relay (1:31.51), just out touching the Blue Devils (1:31.53). Duke (1:19.70) won the men’s event, also setting a new pool record.

Both Duke and North Carolina are scheduled to compete at the Carolina College Invite Feb. 5-6 in Chapel Hill.
