The first full day of prelims from the Arena Pro Swim Series at Santa Clara went off Friday morning with solid swims across the board. Kelsi Worrell had probably the best morning of everybody as her 100 fly time would rank in the top eight in the world this year if she hadn’t been there already. Kevin Cordes also leads a stacked 200 breast field that features four of the eight finalists in the event from Trials last year. And as always, the 100 free on both sides will be a tight race as NCAA Champions Simone Manuel and Caeleb Dressel lead the way in those events.

Women’s 100 Fly

Kelsi Worrell posted the top time with a 57.81 this morning in the prelims of the 100 fly. Worrell has the fastest time ahead of Hellen Moffitt of North Carolina (58.83) and Katie McLaughlin of Cal Aquatics (59.89). Worrell has been the go-to 100 butterflyer on the women’s side after making her first Olympic team last summer. Hellen Moffit is looking more and more like the formidable second swimmer in that event moving forward to the World Championships this summer.

The A-Final will also feature Lauren Case (1:00.01), Farida Osman (1:00.10), Maggie MacNeil (1:00.31), Hang Yu Sze (1:00.33), Isa Paez (1:00.65) and Kathleen Baker (1:00.65). Worrell just missed Dana Vollmer’s meet record of 57.73 from 2010 this morning.

Men’s 100 Fly

Tom Shields posted the top time in the 100 fly prelims with a 53.14. Shields is ahead of Caeleb Dressel (53.34) and Gunnar Bentz (53.37) heading into the final. Shields has been looked at as the go-to butterflyer since Michael Phelps retired. There also was a lot of talk over if Dressel could replicate his amazing NCAA Championships into long course and he put up a solid 100 fly this morning. One of the big surprises was Gunnar Bentz, who is traditionally a 400 IM’r and 200 butterflyer. Bentz posted the third fastest time of the morning, showing his versatility.

Santiago Grassi (53.45), Jack Conger (53.48), Andrew Liang (53.51), Pace Clark (53.56), Justin Lynch (53.60) and Tripp Cooper (53.80) will also swim in the A-final tonight.

Women’s 200 Breast

Emily Escobedo posted the top time of the morning in the 200 breast with a 2:26.91. Escobedo and Cal’s Marina Garcia are head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the pack as Garcia swam a 2:27.13 as the two swimmers went toe to toe in their heat. Escobedo finished third at the NCAA Championships and swam for a non-traditional power at UMBC. The US did not have a finalist at the Olympics last summer in the 200 breast and will be desperately searching for someone to take the mantle and get back in the A-final at a major international meet. Escobedo could be someone in the future that could take that mantle. She also provides a feel-good story as she comes from a non-traditional swimming power, much like 100 breast bronze medalist Katie Meili at Columbia.

Esther Gonzalez (2:29.18), Madisyn Cox (2:29.32), Melissa Rodriguez (2:30.02), Riley Scott (2:30.53), Allie Szekely (2:31.32), Zoe Bartel (2:32.19) and Kim Williams (2:33.32) will swim in the A-final tonight.

Men’s 200 Breast

Kevin Cordes posted a solid time in the 200 breast heats with a 2:12.86. The final is set up for a rematch of the epic 200 breast at last year’s Trials with Cordes, Josh Prenot and Will Licon all coming back into the A-final. They are all at different points in training so it won’t quite be as nail biting as it was in Omaha but it will still be a good race. Cordes leads Miguel de lara Ojeda (2:13.22) and Nic Fink (2:13.58) into the A-final.

Prenot (2:14.32), Chase Kalisz (2:14.82), Licon (2:15.19), Carlos Claverie (2:15.78), Ryan Telford (2:18.53) and Frederik Kamminga (2:18.79) will all swim in the A-final tonight.

Women’s 100 Free

Simone Manuel had the fastest swim of the morning in the 100 free with a 54.90. The defending Olympic gold medalist leads the prelims ahead of teammate Lia Neal (55.04) and Cal Aquatics’ Abbey Weitzeil (55.05). Manuel and Neal are coming off a successful spring where they won the NCAA team championship and are looking solid for a potential World Championship berth later this summer. Weitzeil is also looking to be in good shape for World’s after a less than stellar NCAA’s.

Also a minor storyline this morning is Rebecca Millard. The Texas senior had some pretty good relay splits on Texas’ relays at NCAA’s this year and could turn some heads if she makes the World Championship team this summer.

Siobhan Haughey (55.17), Kelsi Worrell (55.50), Millard (55.51), Amy Bilquist (55.76), Sarah Fournier (55.76) and Katie McLaughlin (55.81) will swim in the A-final tonight.

Men’s 100 Free

The men’s 100 free will be a tight race heading into tonight as Caeleb Dressel posted the top time at 49.38. Marcelo Chierighini and Conor Dwyer are right behind him as the only swimmers under 50 seconds in the prelims. It will be a tight race at finals as any of the swimmers could come away with the win. Nathan Adrian could pull out the win after an easy 50.31 he swam this morning. Also in the field is 2015 Pan American champion in Argentina’s Federico Grabich who is seeded fourth.

Grabich (50.16), Michael Jensen (50.21), Yuri Kisil (50.23) and Adrian (50.31) will be in the final. The last spot will be up for grabs as Maxime Rooney, Ali Khalafalla and Vladimir Morozov will be in a potential swim-off after they tied for 8th at 50.43.

Men’s 400 Free

After a stellar NCAA’s in which he broke two American Records, Clark Smith swam the top time in the 400 free prelims. Many people forget Smith made the Olympic team last summer in the 4×200 free relay and could be the next great American distance swimmer after the retirement of Connor Jaeger. Smith swam a 3:52.70 this morning to lead Louisville’s Marcelo Acosta (3:53.26) and Stanford’s True Sweetser (3:53.36).

Stanford put four girls in the 400 free final earlier and they put three guys in the 400 free final as well with Sweetser, Liam Egan and Grant Shoults. Egan (3:54.58), Jay Litherland (3:54.69), Ricardo Vargas (3:54.72), Matt Hutchins (3:55.17), Shoults (3:55.23) and Jeremy Bagshaw (3:55.74) finished in the top nine this morning.
