Irie, Thormeyer Share 50 Back Knockout Title in Santa Clara

The first round of the men’s 50 back knockout in Santa Clara was a race between Markus Thormeyer, Matt Grevers, Javier Acevedo, Ryosuke Irie, Chris Staka, Austin Katz, Destin Lasco, Yuri Kisil and Jack Alexy.
In the first round, Thormeyer (25.50) held off Grevers (25.55). Acevedo was third in 25.69 and Irie took third in 25.76.
Staka (25.87), Katz (26.28), Lasco (26.39), Kisil (26.67) and Alexy (27.18) rounded out the heat.
Irie dropped just over three-tenths of a second to take the top spot during the semifinals, stopping the clock in 25.42. Thormeyer finished second in 25.50, followed by Grevers (25.53) and Acevedo (25.67).
Moments later, Irie and Thormeyer would get their hands to the wall at the same time to share the 50 back knockout title. They each finished with a time of 25.68.
