Australia Crushes World Junior Record in Women’s 800 Free Relay at 2015 FINA World Junior Championships
Australia swept the relay events on the first day as the Dolphins claimed the women’s 800-meter free relay at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.
Tamsin Cook, Lucy Elizabeth McJannett, Shayna Jack and Gemma Cooney won the event in a meet-record time of 7:56.68. That swim crushed the 7:59.42 meet record set by Team USA in 2013 that also stood as the World Junior record.
Cook’s leadoff leg of 1:58.16 set the meet record in the women’s 200-meter free.
Canada’s Penny Oleksiak, Rebecca Smith, Mary-Sophie Harvey and Taylor Ruck took silver in 7:57.04.
Russia’s Arina Openysheva, Daria Mullakaeva, Valeriia Salamatina and Anastassia Kirpichnikova grabbed bronze in a time of 7:57.58.
USA’s Lauren Case, Melissa Pish, Tatum Wade and Hannah Cox wound up fourth in 7:57.84.
Italy (8:03.38), Japan (8:07.02), China (8:09.57) and Spain (8:11:18) all clocked in with 8:00 times to round out the finale.
