ACC Men’s Championships, Day 3: DQ Drama Has Louisville in Lead

Day 3 of the ACC Men’s Championships, unexpectedly, meant three teams in the lead at some point during the night session. First it was Virginia Tech, which took the early initiative with Youssef Ramadan’s win in the 100 butterfly. Then came NC State’s turn to defend its crown with its depth.

But a controversial disqualification in the 400 medley relay means that we flip the page to the final day of the meet with Louisville out front, including a boost from platform diving scores, completed last week and factored in after Friday’s competition.

100 butterfly

The Hokies started on an emphatic note thanks to Youssef Ramadan, who defended his top seed from morning prelims to win the 100 fly. After going 44.53 in the morning, he lowered his meet record to 44.32, in the process denying Nicolas Albiero of Louisville a repeat championships with a controlled swim from start to finish. Both he and Albiero clocked NCAA A cuts.

Virginia Tech just about maximized its points, with Antani Ivanov in third, leapfrogging Blaise Vera of Pitt from the morning, and Philip Manoff in fifth.

It expands Va Tech’s lead to 33 points over the Cardinals and 91 over NC State.

400 individual medley

Jack Hoagland made it two ACC titles in as many nights, swimming away from the field in 3:40.99 to take 400 IM gold. He won the 500 free on Thursday.

The big jump was Keith Myburgh of Virginia Tech, who gave the Hokies’ title shot a boost by vaulting from sixth after prelims to second in 3:43.45, .01 ahead of NC State’s Erge Gezmis. The top seed from prelims, Virginia’s Casey Storch, ended up fourth.

Tip seeds for prelims are batting sub-.500 in the night setting. Luke Miller’s ACC Men’s Championships/Greensboro Aquatic Center pool record from the morning withstood the evening onslaught, but the NC State freshman had to settled for third in 1:32.93.

The win went to Baturalp Unlu of Georgia Tech, who got to the wall first in 1:32.40. Swimming like someone who wants to win a team title, Philip Manoff of Virginia Tech was second din 1:32.63. NC State went 3-4-8, with Hunter Tapp fourth, jumping into first place in the team standings.

100 breaststroke

ACC Men’s Championships/pool record in the morning. ACC record outright in the evening.

That’s how Evgenii Somov does it on the way to a third straight 100 breaststroke title. Somov controlled the field the entire way on the way to a time of 51.03 seconds. That undercuts Brandon Fiala’s conference record of 51.30 from 2017. Somov took down the meet record in the morning with his 51.36, striking Peter Kropp from the books.

Second was not the Virginia swimmer you might have expected: While Joseph Barnum dropped from the second seed to fifth, Noah Nichols rose from the fifth seed to third in 51.36. Cooper van der Laan of Pitt was third in 51.52. The top three all attained NCAA A cuts.

100 backstroke

Kacper Stokowski got his hand to the wall first in a scintillating race where the top three finishers were separated by .29 seconds.

Georgia Tech’s Kyle Barone took the race out, he and Mitchell Whyte of Louisville clear ahead of the pack at the 50-yard mark, but Barone would fade to fourth in 45.93. Stokowski and top seed Nicolas Albiero closed hard, but it was NC State’s Stokowski who got in first in 44.82 to Albiero’s 44.85. Both are NCAA A cuts.

Louisville, which also had Nikolaos Sofianidis finish sixth, vaults Virginia Tech into second place with NC State out front.

400 medley relay

Twenty minutes to finalize the relay results is always bad news for someone, in this case NC State, which was disqualified for a 15-yard violation on backstroke. That denied the Wolfpack a podium spot, having finished second. Kacper Stokowski was out in 44.51, faster than the time used to win the 100 back, but he was judged not to have broken the surface of the water with his head before the 15-yard mark. NC State coaches were shown on the ACC Network broadcast with pictures of the infraction trying to dispute it, but to no avail.

It didn’t affect the winners Louisville, with Mitchell Whyte, Evgenii Somov, Nicolas Albiero and Abdelrahman Sameh taking charge to win in 3:02.91. They surged ahead on Albeiro’s leg and held off the pack.

Second was Georgia Tech, while NC State’s DQ means Virginia Tech, entering as the fifth seed, ends up on the podium in third. All three are NCAA A cuts.

Pitt was also disqualified for a 15-yard backstroke infraction, wiping out a 41.62 free split by Blaise Vera that would’ve been the fastest in the race.

The lack of points drops NC State to third. Louisville ends the day in first at 783 with Va Tech second in 767.
