ACC Men’s Championships: Louisville Gets Redemption in Medley Relay

A year ago, Louisville entered the ACC Men’s Championships as the top seed in the 200 medley relay, then promptly opened the meet with a DQ.

Wednesday, they rectified that disappointment, with a close call. Despite being the second seed, a second slower than Georgia Tech, the Cardinals surged to a win in 1:22.71. It buzzed within four tenths of the meet record set in 2019 by NC State and led seven (!) NCAA A cuts in the race.

200 medley relay

Louisville got the win, the team of Mitchell Whyte, Evgenii Somov, Dalton Lowe and Abdelrahman Sameh leading wire-to-wire. They navigated a close call with Lowe, the freshman’s reaction time at -0.01. Sameh brought home an 19.76 leg on the end.

Second was top-seeded Georgia Tech, which crept within a quarter second thanks to Christian Ferraro’s 20.07 leg on fly. Third was Virginia, freshman Matthew Brownstead bringing them home in 18.45 to charge from sixth to third.

Also worth recognition was Pittsburgh’s Blaise Vera, who split 19.68 on his butterfly leg, helping the Panthers nab an A cut in seventh.

800 freestyle relay

NC State rode a strong back half of the race to claim the 800 free relay, defending its top seed in 6:12.68. The squad of Lukas Miller, Eric Knowles, Erge Gezmis and Hunter Tapp earned an A cut in the race. Knowles actually provided the fastest split at 1:32.27.

The fastest leg of the race came from Philip Manoff of Virginia Tech, who staked the Hokies to a lead with a 1:32.33 out front. The foursome of him, Antani Ivanov, Carles Coll Marti and Samuel Tornqvist were second in 6:14.04. Louisville, which dominated the second heat of three thanks to Nicolas Albiero’s lead-off of 1:32.31, grabbed the other A cut in 6:16.61.
