ACC Men’s Championships, Day 3 Prelims: Youssef Ramadan, Evgenii Somov, Lukas Miller Set Meet Records

The third day of the ACC Men’s Championships got off to a flying start with three meet records in the morning session.

Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan started it by going 44.53 in the 100 butterfly, taking down the meet record set in 2017 by NC State’s Ryan Held (44.79). It also downed the Greensboro Aquatic Center mark set in 2020 by Louisville’s Nicolas Albiero (44.83).

In the 200 freestyle, Lukas Miler of NC State went 1:32.28 in prelims. That breaks the meet record held jointly between Albiero and Scott Robison of Virginia from 2010 at 1:32.45.

Evgenii Somov of Louisville entered his name to the record books in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 51.36. It shaves a tenth off the meet record held since 2017 by Peter Kropp of Duke. He also trimmed by a half second his pool record from last year.

Albiero will be stalking Ramadan in the final with the second seed in 45.00. Third is Pitt’s Blaise Vera, continuing a great meet. Four of the finalists are seniors.

Casey Storch of Virginia leads the way in prelims at 3:44.24, but NC State is positioned to score significant points with three A-finalists. Eric Knowles is the second seed at 3:44.85. Just .01 back is teammate Erge Gezmis, who tied with Notre Dame’s Jack Hoagland, champion of the 500 free. The top six swimmers are separated by less than a second.

200 freestyle

With Miller setting the pace, the Wolfpack have four of the top nine qualifiers in the race, Hunter Tapp and Noah Bowers breaking into the A final. Baturalp Unlu of Georgia Tech is the second seed, meaning the top two are freshmen, then there’s nearly a second back to third seed Philip Manoff of Virginia Tech.

The vets are all there. First is Somov, one of four seniors in the final. Second is Virginia’s Joseph Barnum in 51.93. Fourth is North Carolina’s Valdas Abaliksta, and sixth is 200 IM champ Caio Pumputis of Georgia Tech.

Albiero is the top seed in the 100 back to complete his daunting double. He went 45.26 in the morning, .07 quicker than NC State’s Kacper Stokowski. Louisville’s stoke prowess can gain the Cardinals some ground in this race, with Mitchell Whyte and Nikolaos Sofianidis also in the A final.
