2022 Big Ten Women’s Championship: Ohio State Claims Title Despite Michigan Record Swims

The 2022 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship concluded on Saturday in Madison, Wisconsin, with the Day 4 finals as Ohio State swam to the title for the second year in a row.

The final day of the meet will see the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, platform diving and then 1,650 freestyle.

Ohio State entered the day with the lead after claiming three relay titles so far, plus individual titles from Hannah Bach and Amy Fulmer.

Michigan’s Maggie Mac Neil was named Swimmer of the Meet for the third time in her career.

Michigan’s Olivia Carter shattered the Big Ten meet record in the 200 butterfly and the Wolverines broke the 400 free meet record to close the meet out.

It wasn’t enough to catch the Buckeyes, who used their depth and relays to claim back-to-back conference titles.

Big Ten Women’s 1650 Freesyle

Wisconsin freshman Paige McKenna held tough throughout the 1,650 freestyle and earned a Big Ten title in the event.

She finished in 15:47.31, an NCAA automatic qualifying time.

Northwestern sophomore Lola Mull took second in 15:51.38, also an NCAA “A” cut.

Indiana freshman Ching Hwee Gan was third in 15:53.81, a “B” cut, followed by Ohio State sophomore Maya Geringer (16:01.30).

Big Ten Women’s 200 Backstroke

Wisconsin sophomore Phoebe Bacon swept the backstroke events, claiming the Big Ten title in the 200 backstroke. The Olympian touched the wall in 1:51.23, a half-second drop from prelims.

Indiana freshman Anna Peplowski took second (1:53.30), followed by Northwestern junior Emma Lepisova (1:53.37).

Wisconsin senior Mara Newman finished fourth (1:53.96), followed by Penn State senior Marie Schobel (1:54.37), Michigan sophomore Casey Chung (1:53.80), Ohio State sophomore Tristan Harrison (1:54.92) and Ohio State freshman Paige Hall (1:54.94).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Freestyle

Michigan senior Maggie Mac Neil dropped seven tenths from her prelims time to surge to the Big Ten title in the 100 freestyle.

Mac Neil touched the wall in 47.10, about a half second behind her own Big Ten meet record set two years ago (46.57).

Ohio State took 2-3 with Amy Fulmer, who had the top seed from prelioms, finishing second in 47.46, followed by Katherine Zenick (47.57).

Northwestern had the next two spots as Madeline Smith was fourth (47.71), followed by Jasmine Nocentini (47.76).

Michigan freshman Lindsay Flynn was sixth (48.26), followed by Wisconsin’s Sophie Fiske (48.33) and Minnesota’s Hannah Cornish (48.66).

Big Ten Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Indiana earned a 1-2 finish with a freshman and a senior taking the top two spots in the 200 breaststroke.

Freshman Breara Crawford won the event in 2:06.86, ahead of senior teammate Noelle Peplowski (2:07.32). Both were NCAA “B” cuts.

Ohio State took the next two spots, which was huge in the team race, as Hannah Bach was third (2:07.40) and Josephine Panitz was fourth (2:07.97).

Northwestern junior Hannah Brunzell was fifth (2:08.98), followed by Michigan freshman Letitia Sim (2:08.74).

Wisconsin senior Jenna Silvestri was seventh (2:09.24), followed by Northwestern senior Sophie Angus (2:08.53).

Big Ten Women’s 200 Butterfly

Michigan senior Olivia Carter put a stamp on her Big Ten career, crushing the field by two seconds to win the 200 butterfly.

Carter won the race in 1:51.83, breaking her own Big Ten meet record of 1:52.17 set last year. It was a stunning two-second drop from prelims.

Minnesota sophomore Megan Van Berkom was second in 1:53.89, which was neraly two more seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Ohio State fifth years Katie Trace (1:55.12) and Kristen Romano (1:55.22) took the next two spots.

Purdue had four in the fianls with Maycey Vieta second (349.50), Maggie Merriman third (324.00), Sophia McAfee fifth (294.75) and Emily Pfeiffer eighth (266.05).

Big Ten Women’s 400 Freestyle Relay

The Michigan women closed the meet on a high note with a Big Ten meet record in the 400 freestyle relay.

Lindsay Flynn, Claire Newman, Olivia Carter and Maggie Mac Neil finished in 3:09.84 to break the previous mark of 3:10.29 set in 2019 by Mac Neil, Catie DeLoof, Daria Pyschnenko and Siobhan Haughey.

Ohio State’s Katherine Zenick, Teresa Ivan, Kristen Romano and Amy Fulmer finished second in 3:20.32.

Wisconsin’s Lillie Hosack, Alana Palmer, Phobe Bacon and Sophie Fiske took third in 3:11.58.

All three were NCAA “A” cuts.
