2022 Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 2 Finals: Sarah Bacon Breaks 11-year-old Big Ten Diving Record; OSU Sets Relay Mark

The 2022 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship continued on Thursday in Madison, Wisconsin, with the Day 2 finals.

The second finals session of the meet began with the 500 freestyle, then the 200 IM and 50 freestyle before 1-meter diving, which was won by Minnesota’s Sarah Bacon in a Big Ten record.

Ohio State entered the day with the lead after winning both relays on Wednesday night. They won another relay in a Big Ten record on Thursday and cling to a close lead over Michigan.

Big Ten Women’s 500 Freestyle

Wisconsin freshman Paige McKenna hung on to her top seed in the 500 freestyle, winning in 4:32.09, dropping two seconds from her morning prelims time and holding off the field by a second.

Northwestern sophomore Lola Mull took second in 4:39.03 to hold off Ohio State sophomore Maya Geringer (4:39.55) and Michigan sophomore Kathryn Ackerman (4:40.00).

Indiana freshman Ching Hwee Gan took fifth (4:40.39), followed by Wisconsin freshman Abby Carlson (4:43.08), Indiana sophomore Ella Ristic (4:44.82) and Indiana freshman Mariah Denigan (4:45.70).

All times were NCAA provisional qualifying times.

Big Ten Women’s 200 IM

Ohio State fifth-year senior Kristen Romano used the fastest first 50 split to propel her to the conference title in the 200 IM. Romano touched the wall in 1:54.43 to hold off the field by a half second.

Minnesota sophomore Megan Van Berkom hung with Romano but took second in 1:54.92.

Wisconsin sophomore Phoebe Bacon finished third in 1:55.64, just ahead of Indiana seniors Mackenzie Looze (1:55.68) and Noelle Peplowski (1:55.88).

Wisconsin senior Jenna Silvestri finished sixth in 1:56.65, ahead of Michigan seniors Victoria Kwan (1:56.80) and Olivia Carter (1:57.24).

Big Ten Women’s 50 Free

Michigan senior Maggie Mac Neil was just four hundredths of a second off the Big Ten record in the 50 freestyle. The Olympic butterfly champion touched the wall in 21.32, an NCAA automatic qualifying time.

Ohio State junior Amy Fulmer was nearly a half second back at 21.71 as the rest of the field earned NCAA “B” cuts in the event.

Mac Neil was out in 10.39 and came home in 10.93, the only swimmer in the field to break 11 seconds on the back half.

Northwestern sophomore Jasmine Nocentini took third (21.78), followed by Michigan freshman Lindsay Flynn (21.94), Ohio State sophomore Katherine Zenick (21.96), Wisconsin senior Lillie Hosack (22.00), Northwestern senior Madeline Smith (22.17) and Michigan sophomore Claire Newman (22.24).

Big Ten Women 1-Meter Diving

Minnesota senior Sarah Bacon broke the Big Ten record on the 1-meter diving board with a score of 376.10.

The NCAA champion bettered the previous mark of 370.30 set in 2011 by Minnesota’s Kelci Bryant.

Indiana senior Kristen Hayden was second in 330.65, followed by Minnesota senior Joy Zhu (327.40), Indiana sophomores Tarrin Gilliland (325.25) and Anne Fowler (313.00), Rutgers senior Abigail Knapton (311.00), Purdue senior Emily Pfeiffer (310.05) and Michigan senior Allie Klein (306.50).

Big Ten Women’s 400 Medley Relay

Ohio State broke the Big Ten record in the 400 medley relay to claim the conference title. The Buckeyes finished in 3:26.35, behind Emily Crane, Hannah Bach, Katherine Zenick and Amy Fulmer.

The previous mark was 3:26.60 set by Indiana in 2019.

Michigan’s Maggie Mac Neil, Letitia Sim, Olivia Carter and Lindsay Flynn finished second in 3:27.73.

Northwestern’s Emma Lepisova, Sophie Angus, Miriam Guevara and Madeline Smith took third (3:29.47).
