2020 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Day Four Finals: Michigan Claims First Title Since 2016
Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships
Bloomington, Indiana
The 2020 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Saturday night from the campus of Indiana University with the finals of the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast and 200 fly.
Michigan won the team title for the first time since 2016 as their senior class finally went out as winners, beating three-time champs Indiana in their home pool. The Wolverines celebrated their 41st overall conference title in men’s swimming and diving.
Michigan collected wins on Saturday night from seniors Felix Auböck and Tommy Cope, with the latter winning his first ever individual title.
The Hoosiers actually finished in third place behind Ohio State. Wisconsin finished in fourth place for their highest finish since 2001.
Indiana had a really good night with wins from Gabriel Fantoni, Bruno Blaskovic and Brendan Burns. Their 400 free relay ended the meet victoriously in their home pool.
Ohio State’s Lyle Yost won the platform diving event.

Thompson also won four 500 titles.

200 Back
Indiana junior Gabriel Fantoni swept the backstroke events at the Big Ten men’s swimming and diving championships as the Hoosiers have gotten off to a great start in their home pool on Saturday night. Fantoni won from lane 7 with a 1:40.31, adding on to his 100 back title from last night. Fantoni successfully defended his title from 2019 as the Hoosiers have now won the last four Big Ten titles in the 200 back.
Penn State’s Michael Daly (1:40.63) and Wisconsin’s Cameron Tysoe (1:41.02) had great swims for their respective schools as Daly almost became Penn State’s first conference title in three years.
Michigan’s Robert Zofchak (1:41.34) had a big drop from this morning as he moved up to fourth.
Northwestern’s Martos Bacarizo (1:41.44) has helped them get up to fifth place in the team standings with a fifth place finish.
Ohio State’s Thomas Watkins (1:41.75), Jonah Cooper (1:42.35) and Colin McDermott (1:43.26) finished in sixth, seventh and eighth.

Indiana’s Bruno Blaskovic swept the sprint freestyle events in his home pool, joining his classmate Gabriel Fantoni as double individual winners for the Hoosiers. Blaskovic won the 100 freestyle on the final night of the Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships with a 41.88 as he was the only swimmer to break 42 seconds. He set the pool record this morning of 41.49 and was barely off the meet record of 41.43 from Blake Pieroni two years ago.
Indiana has now won four of the last Big Ten titles in the 100 freestyle as Pieroni won three from 2016 – 2018.
Ohio State’s Andrew Loy (42.21) finished in second after he won the 200 IM and 200 freestyle earlier in the meet. He has a shot to be named the swimmer of the championships.
Indiana’s Mohamed Samy finished in third at 42.38, scoring big points for the Hoosiers who are trying to hold on to second place. Sophomore Jack Franzman swam his best time in getting fourth at 42.45. That should bode well for their 400 free relay.
Michigan’s Gus Borges (42.61), Ohio State’s Semuede Andreis (43.12), Matthew Abeysinghe (43.17) and Iowa’s Aleksey Tarasenko (43.46) also swam in the championship final.
There he goes again. 💨

Michigan senior Tommy Cope won his first individual Big Ten title in the 200 breaststroke with a 1:51.44 as he held off a hard charge from Ohio State’s Paul DeLakis (1:51.65) and Minnesota’s Max McHugh (1:51.80). DeLakis finished in second place in all three of his events as he was behind teammate Andrew Loy in the 200 free and 200 IM. McHugh could not double up after he won the 100 breast last night.
All three of those guys should meet again in 25 days at the NCAA championships in Indianapolis.
Michigan won its first Big Ten title in the 200 breaststroke since Scott Spann won in 2008. This also marks the first year since 2009 that someone not from the state of Indiana as the Hoosiers and Boilermakers had won every year since 2009.
Michigan’s Jeremy Babinet (1:52.77), Ohio State’s Jason Mathews (1:53.04), Iowa’s Daniel Swanepoel (1:53.53), Michigan’s Charlie Swanson (1:53.62) and Wisconsin’s Jian Mao (1:54.73) also swam in the championship final.

200 Fly
The Indiana Hoosiers continued their incredible night on the final night of the 2020 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in their home pool with a win from Brendan Burns in the 200 butterfly at 1:40.98. Burns ran down fellow freshman Federico Burdisso (1:41.92) of Northwestern who faded to fourth place after leading for 150 meters.
We highlighted this race as one of the must watch events of the meet and it lived up to the hype as seniors Miles Smachlo (1:41.47) of Michigan and Noah Lense (1:41.57) of Ohio State also factored into the race on the final 50.
Burns was second in the 100 back and third in the 100 fly as he won Indiana’s fourth straight Big Ten title in the 200 butterfly
Iowa’s Michael Tenney (1:44.37), Indiana’s Van Mathias (1:44.56), Wisconsin’s Joseph Milinovich (1:44.69) and Indiana’s Chris Bathurst (1:45.55) also swam in the championship final.

Ohio State freshman Lyle Yost had a tremendous last dive to take the platform title with 451 points. He finished just ahead of Purdue’s Ben Bramley (447.90), who was going for Purdue’s fourth straight title in this event. But Yost achieved Ohio State’s first platform title since Colin Zeng won in 2016.
