25-year-old Zane Grothe jokingly posted on Instagram about how him and Clark Smith were the only ones swimming in the 800 free tonight not in high school. Grothe had a serious challenge though from World Junior champion Andrew Abruzzo. Grothe held off the 18-year-old with a 7:53.88 to Abruzzo’s 7:54.51. Abruzzo will be headed to Georgia next year.
They could not catch the pool record of 7:50.28 from 1995 Pan Pacs set by Australia’s Daniel Kowalski. That meet was the first major meet held in the Atlanta pool.
Marwan El Kamash finished in third from an early heat with a 7:59.42.
Jake Magahey (8:03.52), Trey Freeman (8:06.96), Clark Smith (8:07.78), Brennan Gravley (8:14.77) and Christian Bayo (8:17.98) also placed in the top eight.
