After leading through prelims and semifinals, American record holder Kevin Cordes officially punched his ticket to Rio in the men’s 100 breast. The first-time Olympian stopped the clock in 59.18, just ahead of Cody Miller’s 59.26.
During semifinals, Cordes broke Eric Shanteau‘s American record and Mark Gangloff’s U.S. Open record, touching in a time of 58.94. His time from semis ranks him second in the world this year behind world record holder Adam Peaty.
Codes, who swam collegiately for the University of Arizona, talked to the media about how he swam his own race and his upcoming 200 breast on Wednesday.
