Two Pool Records for Sara Jass Lead Illinois Past Vanderbilt
Illinois’s Sara Jass set a pair of pool records in Champaign as Fighting Illini topped Vanderbilt, 156-106, on Saturday.
Jass set pool records at the ARC Pool in both the 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley. Her time in the former moves her up to second in program history. Illinois also set pool marks in both relays as the team set five marks as a squad. The visiting Commodores etched their names on the board three times.
Jass went 2:13.12 in the 200 breaststroke, leading a 1-2-3 finish that helped solidify Illinois’s grasp on the meet. That’s a college-best time for the sophomore, two-tenths faster than her top time from last fall. It trails only the 2:12.95 set in 2009 by Marissa Clapp as the school’s long-standing record.
Gwen Bakker and Kylee Sessions rounded out the podium sweep.
Jass led another 1-2-3 in the 400 IM with a time of 4:15.46 to rewrite the pool mark. She led Kalina Nikolaeva and Adelaide Reaser to the wall.
Illinois started the meet fast. Sydney Stoll, Sessions, Logan Kuehne and Lily Olson went 1:42.21 to set the pool mark in the 200 medley relay. Reaser won the 1,000 free in 10:10.14, a time that moved her to 10th in program history. Then Stoll won the 200 free in 1:48.99 to book her pool record.
The meet, which did not include diving competition, ended with Laurel Bludgen, Olson, Margaret Adler and Molly Yetter going 1:33.00 to set the 200 free relay pool mark.
Bludgen won the 50 free in 23.57. Suvana Baskar went 55.31 to win the 100 back. Paloma Canos Cervera, who had been second to Reaser in the 1,000, won the 500 in 4:57.74.
Vanderbilt had plenty to show for its trip north. Kailia Utley won the 200 fly with a time of 2:00.36. She also prevailed in the 100 fly in 54.81. Both are pool marks.
Faith Knelson helped generate some mid-meet momentum by edging Jass to win the 100 breast in 1:01.74, also a pool record. Abby Francis (51.72) paced a 1-2 in the 100 free with teammate Megan Ciezczak, who had also been second to Bludgen in the 50 free.
