The Phelps-Lochte battle is one for the history books. Not only are Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte two of the most decorated swimmers of all time, but they are also two of the most exciting to watch go head-to-head.

One year ago today, the men set out on their final Phelps-Lochte battle on U.S. soil – the 200 IM at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. Phelps got to the wall first this time around by about three tenths, but both men have had their fair share of time on top throughout their 13 years of racing.

Whether it is a rivalry or not, one thing is clear: The Phelps-Lochte era of swimming will be appreciated for years to come.

Swimming World is digging into the archives this week to carry on these legacies from the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Splashbacks from day 1day 2day 3day 4 and day 5 are also available.
