Abbey Weitzeil punched her ticket to Rio by winning the women’s 100 free in 53.28. She was two tenths faster than runner-up Simone Manuel.

Weitzeil, who entered the meet as the fifth seed, broke Cate Campbell’s U.S. Open record of 53.30 set back in 2008. Her time ranks her seventh in the world this year.

She said her personal goal for the meet was to break the 53 second barrier and knows she can achieve that in Rio next month. She’s looking forward to the 4×100 free relay and knows everyone has more in the tank.

Weitzeil deferred her first year from Cal and currently trains with Canyons Aquatics under head coach Coley Stickels. She’s also scheduled to compete in the 50 free this week in Omaha, where she is seeded sixth. She owns the American record in the 50 yard freestyle.

The first-time Olympian talked to the media about staying in her own lane, deferring enrollment from Cal, and her excitement for Rio.
