Tonight, Lilly King will attempt to make the 2017 World Championships team as one of the USA’s most dominant breaststrokers. But before she gained this status, King had to rise up the ranks in the big pool. One year ago today, she did just that as she qualified for her first Olympic Team in the 100 meter breaststroke.

Finger-wagging, gold medals, confidence and struggle all came shortly after the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2016. But we should not forget the moment that started it all for Lilly King.

Swimming World is digging into the archives this week to recap all these memorable moments from the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Splashbacks from the first day of Olympic Trials can be found here while those from day two are available here.
