Cammile Adams stuck to her game plan in the final of the women’s 200 butterfly at the FINA world championships, and it paid off with a silver medal. She talked about the final and how watching Ryan Lochte’s medal ceremony before her race affected her.
“Watching Ryan right before me I think is what did it,” she said. “Hearing the (U.S. national) anthem … amped us both (Katie McLaughlin) up.”

A pep talk from coach Dave Marsh before the race, and a lot of self-talk during the race were also key to getting the medal.
“The first 100 I just said, ‘Relax, stick to your game plan, stick to your game plan, relax.’ That’s what David’s been saying to me all day. On the last 25 I said, ‘You just saw Ryan do this. Let’s get it done.’”
The move to Charlotte, N.C., to work with Marsh at SwimMAC Carolina has been paying off dividends, from winning the 200 fly at the Pan Pacific championships last year to earning a world medal in Russia. Adams said strength training and innovative sets in the pool have helped, but she also pointed to some personal growth as a key element.
“I think I’ve just grown so much as a person, and that’s transitioned to the pool really well,” she said. “I’ve grown a lot since January. I’ve really had to trust what he (Marsh) is doing. We’ve gotten to know each other a lot better, … and it’s been wonderful.”
