Ryan Cochrane didn’t want to be left out of the 1500 freestyle final in the same fashion that he was shut out of the 800 free. After miscalculating his 800 prelim swim, the Canadian star was more aggressive in the 1500 prelims, putting up the sixth-fastest time to give him the opportunity to swim for a fourth-straight world medal in the event.
“I was extremely disappointed in myself with the 800,” he said. “I thought that would be my best race here, so I really had to let myself feel bad for one day and get faster right away because I am lucky to have another event that I have a chance to medal at.”

Cochrane has said that he’s looking at the end of an impressive career, already noting that he has competed in his final Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific championships. But, with the next world championships coming one year after the 2016 Olympics, Cochrane said he hasn’t completely closed the door on staying with the sport one year longer than originally planned.
“I could see myself swimming another year to Budapest (the site of the 2017 world championships),” he said, noting that the pressure of competing at the Pan American Games last month in his home country put an emotional toll on him and his Canadian teammates.
“I think we can expect better things with a more normal year, hopefully next year,” he said.
