Navy Adds Verbal Commitment from Breaststroker/IMer Riley Gavigan

NEW COMMIT: Setauket, N.Y. native and Winter Juniors qualifier Riley Gavigan has announced her verbal commitment to the United States Naval Academy and will arrive on campus as a member of the class of 2024.

Gavigan swims year-round with Three Village Swim Club and capped off a successful long course season with six top-15 finishes at Eastern Zone Seniors after finaling in the 200m IM at Metropolitan LCM Seniors. Last winter, she placed seventh in the 100 breast at Metropolitan SCY Seniors before going on to place fourth in the 200 breast at Ithaca Sectionals.

Also competing for Ward Melville Senior High School, Gavigan is a five-time New York Federation Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American placed fourth in the 100 back and eighth in the 200 IM as a junior after finishing 10th in the 100 breast during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic careers at the United States Naval Academy. Thank you to everyone who helped me get here! GO NAVY”

Her best times include:

  • 50 breast – 30.26
  • 100 breast – 1:03.55
  • 200 breast – 2:17.04
  • 200 IM – 2:05.10
  • 400 IM – 4:25.40

Gavigan would’ve scored in the A-final of both breaststroke events as well as the B-final of both IMs at the 2019 Patriot League Championships where Navy won the team title in dominant fashion. Hannah PrattMaya NovackTheresa MilioAbbie SullivanEmily Morrissey and Syd Paglia will also join Gavigan next fall.
