LumaLanes Performance of the Week: Regan Smith Shatters WJR, NAG Records

This week’s Performance Of The Week, sponsored by LumaLanes, goes to American Regan Smith for her world junior record and national age group record at the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis this week.

The 15-year old, who is fresh off a fifth place finish at the 2017 FINA World Championships in the 200 backstroke, continued her impressive summer with two WJRs on the second day of competition in Indy. She started with an individual gold medal in the 100 back, touching in 59.11 to break the world junior record and Missy Franklin’s 15-16 NAG record of 59.18. She also edged out Canada’s Taylor Ruck, who had broken the WJR in prelims with a 59.28 and was 59.23 in the final.

But Smith wasn’t done there, as she came back less than an hour later to lead off the USA’s mixed medley relay in 58.95, rebreaking her NAG record and making her the youngest US woman under 59 seconds in the 100 backstroke. Her old WJR from the individual event will stand, as you cannot break world records leading off mixed gender relays. Smith also won gold in the 200 back (2:07.45) on the third day of the meet, just tenths off her PB from World Championships.

With plenty of time to continue to take that record lower (Smith doesn’t turn 16 until February), she has showed the world she is one to watch for in the coming years. Congratulations Regan Smith on earning Swimming World’s Performance of the Week!

Special Thanks to LumaLanes for sponsoring Swimming World’s Performance of the Week.
