Meet of the Week: Coast Guard vs. Wheaton

Saturday’s NEWMAC showdown between the women of Coast Guard vs. Wheaton did not disappoint as the meet of the week. Headed in the final 200 freestyle relay, Coast Guard found themselves on top of the team scores 141-136. At this point, there were a few ways this meet could go down – a Wheaton win and a Coast Guard two-three would end in a tie, a Wheaton one-three would clinch the meet by four, and obviously a Coast Guard win would secure their victory.

In case this ending was not dramatic enough, the relay teams of Caitlin Daley, Maggie Lawlor, Tayla Slater and Jenna Hayden (W) and Kristen Young, Christine McCulla, Rachel Seaman and Jackie Kokomoor (CG) tied with a time of 1:41.55. This gave each team 7.50 points, with the Wheaton B team taking third. While this narrowed the gap, it was not quite enough to put Wheaton on top.

Wheaton was able to grab the 200 medley relay to kick off the meet. Kelley Baylis, Erin Kean, Aleza Epstein and Daley teamed up to win the event in 1:53.07 over Coast Guard’s 1:53.40. But the dynamic distance duo of Christine McCulla and Maddie Heist put Coast Guard back on track by going one-two in the 1,000. The team also had one-two finishes in the 200 free, 100 breast, 100 free and 500 free. These efforts put Coast Guard ahead of two dominant Wheaton divers and nearly two relay victories for Wheaton.

Maddy Morrison and Katherine Conway finished first and second on both one meter and three meter for Wheaton. Jenna Hayden also had a good day for the Lyons, winning both the 100 and 200 backstroke and grabbing second place in the 100 fly (59.99) against Coast Guard’s Kristen Young. Young had the top swims of the day overall, winning the 100 fly (59.81), 200 free (1:56.42) and 100 free (54.20).

Last year, the Lyons lost by 12 points, so the fact that they narrowed this gap foreshadows a close contest at the NEWMAC Championships in February.

  • Katherine Kustritz (100/200 breast- Denison): Freshman Kustritz posted a 1:03.33 and 2:18.68 in her respective events as she dominated the breaststrokes against Division I Ohio State on Friday night. Both of these swims are the fastest times so far this season by at least two seconds.
  • Campbell Costley (1,650 free – Denison): Costley clocked in at 17:18.21 for the 1650 as Denison beat Xavier on Saturday. This marks the first distance B cut for any swimmer and is dominantly the fastest time in this event.
  • Oliver Smith (50 free – Emory): Reigning NCAA Champion in the 50 free Ollie Smith re-claimed his dominance in his signature event this weekend against SCAD. His 20.34 was good enough for a B cut and the top time in the nation so far this season. He now sits .07 ahead of All-Americans Jesse Novak and Ryan Boraski.
  • Mitchell Riek (200 fly – Carnegie Melon): Sophomore Mitchell Riek achieved an NCAA B cut and the top time in the nation this weekend with his 1:51.65 200 fly. He finished third in this event as a freshman at last year’s NCAA Championships with a 1:47.68. This was his first time under 1:49. His swim puts him roughly three seconds ahead of where he was at this point last season.
