2022 Big 12 Championships: Daniel Krueger, Carson Foster, Anna Elendt Post Quick Times as Texas Completes Dominant Performance

It has been a dominant performance for the Texas Longhorns all week at the Big 12 Championships in Morgantown, W.Va., and the women and men were impressive again as they put the finishing touches on a conference meet that doubles as a tune-up for next month’s NCAA Championships. At the national meet, the Texas men will attempt to win a 16th national title under legendary coach Eddie Reese (and a second straight title), while Carol Capitani’s Longhorn women will look to match or better last year’s third-place finish.

On the final night, Carson Foster (200 back) and Daniel Krueger (100 free) each posted impressive wins, while on the women’s side, Kelly Pash cemented her third win of the meet and Anna Elendt moved to eighth all-time with a huge performance in the 200 breaststroke. In the end, both Texas teams cruised to conference titles, the 10th straight for the women and the 26th straight for the men.

Women’s 200 Backstroke

Following a Friday night win in the 100 fly, Texas’ Olivia Bray earned her second triumph of the meet in the 200 back as she posted a 1:51.09 to win by six seconds. Bray clipped two hundredths off the Big 12 meet record set by former Longhorn Tasija Karosas in 2017, and she moved up to ninth in the nation in the event.

Finishing second was TCU’s Rylee Moore in 1:57.34, and West Virginia’s Paige Dressel touched third in 1:57.43.

Men’s 200 Backstroke

Texas’ Carson Foster is best known for his abilities in the individual medley events, particularly the 400 IM, but Foster first emerged on the junior scene as a 200 backstroker, and it would be no surprise if Foster is among the top finishers in the event at the national championships. Foster touched first at the Big 12 meet in 1:39.42, slightly improving on his previous season-best time (1:39.45) that ranked him fourth in the nation. Virginia Tech’s Sam Tornqvist, Cal’s Destin Lasco and Indiana’s Brendan Burns are all ranked slightly ahead of Foster, but no swimmer has broken 1:39 yet this season.

Texas’ Peter Larson touched second in 1:41.64, and West Virginia’s Justin Heimes finished third in 1:41.64.

Women’s 100 Freestyle

Texas’ Kelly Pash became the first female swimmer to win three events at the meet as she topped the 100 free in 48.42, just off her prelims mark of 48.32. Previously, Pash won the 200 IM and 200 free, and her performance was especially impressive as she did not compete in her signature butterfly events this week.

A pair of Longhorns finished second and third behind Pash with Bridget Semenuk (48.73) and Kyla Leibel (49.26).

Men’s 100 Freestyle

The Texas pair of Daniel Krueger and Drew Kibler tied for second in the 100 free at last year’s NCAA Championships, but it was all Krueger here. Krueger won the race by more than a half-second in 41.49 as he pulled away from teammate Cameron Auchinachie on the second 50. Krueger was just off his season-best time of 41.45 that ranks third in the nation behind LSU’s Brooks Curry and Tennessee’ Jordan Crooks.

Auchinachie took second in 42.08, while Kibler was third in 42.38.

Women’s 1650 Freestyle

Erica Sullivan got a push from Texas teammate Evie Pfeifer in the women’s mile, but she finished the race strong to win by a second-and-a-half. Sullivan led early on before Pfeifer took over around the 800-yard mark and then Sullivan, the Olympic silver medalist in the 1500-meter freestyle, passed Pfeifer back with 400 yards to go.

Sullivan finished in 15:58.74, off her season-best time of 15:53.80. Sullivan currently ranks eighth in the nation, so she may end up in an outside lane in the fastest heat of this event at the NCAA Championships or possibly outside of the top heat altogether if a swimmer from outside the top eight manages to surpass Sullivan’s season-best later Saturday evening at the Pac-12 Championships.

Pfeifer finished second in 16:00.28, which will rank her No. 11 in the country, while Olivia McMurray took third for the Longhorns in 16:22.78.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Texas’ Emma Sticklen was just off her season-best time of 1:52.47 that ranks sixth nationally, but she had plenty in the tank to crush the field in the women’s 200 fly by six seconds. She came into the wall at 1:52.82, more than six seconds ahead of teammate Mary Smutny (1:59.08). West Virginia’s Mia Walters took third in 2:01.34.

Men’s 200 Butterfly

For the first time all week, a Texas swimmer did not touch the wall first in a swimming final. In the 200 fly, likely the weakest event for the national-title favorite Longhorns, it was West Virginia’s David Dixon who took the win in 1:43.64. Dixon was eight tenths behind Texas’ Coby Carrozza with 50 yards to go, but he finished in a blistering 27.33 split to secure the win. Carrozza took second in 1:44.15, while TCU’s Piotr Sadlowski took third in 1:47.49.

However, the fastest time of the night did belong to a Texas swimmer. Sam Artmann, swimming in the B-final since he was entered in the meet as an exhibition swimmer, recorded a time of 1:42.12, a second-and-a-half quicker than Dixon’s winning time. Artmann’s time ranks him among the top 25 swimmers in the nation.

Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay

Just like the women in the previous event, the Texas men destroyed the field in the 400 free relay, their time of 2:47.59 breaking the Big 12 meet record set by a team including Olympian Townley Haas in 2018. The Longhorns were about a second off their seed time of 2:46.46, which ranks third nationally behind NC State and Virginia, but Texas will undoubtedly be in the mix and perhaps favored to win a national title with this elite group at their peak.

Cameron Auchinachie (42.12), Drew Kibler (41.80), Caspar Corbeau (42.55) and Daniel Krueger (41.12) swam the four legs for Texas, with Krueger in particular standing out with his blistering anchor leg.

TCU’s team of Noah CumbyRaphael Paiva Da Lima, Jake Litchfield and Jadon Wuilliez took second in 2:53.55, and West Virginia’s Max Gustafson, Braden Osborn, Roanoke Shirk and Conner McBeth grabbed third in 2:56.07.
