2022 Big 12 Championships: Olivia Bray Narrows In On Meet Record

The third day of the Big 12 swimming and diving championships continued at the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Olivia Bray, currently ranked at No. 8 nationally in the 100 butterfly, is poised to break her previously set Big-12 and conference meet record with a strong swim. Bray had an impressive swim at prelims (51.38) clocking in almost a full three seconds before the second-place swimmer. Bray set this record at Big-12 championships last year.

Texas overall had a solid start to the day with a first-place finish in every event on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Women’s 100 Butterfly

The competition opened Friday morning with the women’s 100 butterfly. After four heats, Texas’ Olivia Bray (51.38) leads going into tonight’s finals. Bray set this record at Big-12’s last year and today’s time is only slightly behind her season-best, 51.07. She also claimed the only NCAA “B” cut swim for this event. Bray’s Texas teammate Morgan Brophy took second in 54.19 followed closely behind with fellow Longhorn Ava Longi (54.29).

Men’s 100 Butterfly

The Texas men opened the morning strong taking top spots. Zac Van Zandt (45.48) swam his best time of the season. Tim Connery (45.56) was barely out swum coming in eight one-hundreths of a second behind his teammate. The top-six swims from this morning’s race all registered NCAA “B” cuts.

Women’s 400 IM

After four heats we had our eight A finalists. The Longhorn women claimed half of those time slots with Kelly Pash going 4:11.10, an NCAA “B” cut time. She was followed by her teammates Evie Pfeifer (4:12.52), Olivia McMurray (4:18.66), and last night’s big winner Erica Sullivan (4:19.58). A trio of Jayhawks and one Mountaineer will battle it out with the Texas women tonight in the A final.

Going into this morning’s event, Carson Foster has one of the only two A-cut times in the country. He swam to third (3:47.49), a “B” cut, behind his brother Jake (3:44.82) and teammate David Johnston (3:43.50). This is a season-best for Johnston. One other Longhorn joins the top three tonight along with two swimmers from TCU and one from West Virginia.

Women’s 200 Freestyle

The women’s 200 freestyle saw a close race with the top four spots being within nearly a second of one another. Kyla Leibel (1:47.62), Serena Gould (1:48.31), Bridget Semenuk (1:48.44), and Mary Smutny (1:48.77) all swam a tight race. With the differential of first and eighth place being 3.32 seconds tonight’s swim will be an exciting one.

The Texas men once again had a strong showing this morning taking six of the eight spots for tonight’s A final. Drew Kibler (1:32.88) was 14 hundredths of a second off of his season-best time. There’s a good chance he will surpass that time tonight. Peter Larson (1:33.24) hit his season-best this morning as well.
