2020 WAC Championships Day 2 Finals Cancelled; Prelims Scored as Timed Finals
A major water break which has closed the University of Houston campus has forced the Western Athletic Conference to cancel Thursday’s evening session of the 2020 WAC Swimming and Diving Championship.
After a vote of the coaches, it was decided to score Thursday’s preliminary races as timed finals. The 200 freestyle relays that were originally scheduled for Thursday night will now take place at the start of Friday’s evening session, which is now scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. local time.
In addition, the men’s 1-Meter and the women’s 3-Meter dive finals, which were originally scheduled for Thursday night will now take place on Friday. As a result, the men’s Platform dive, which was originally scheduled for Friday, will now take place on Saturday along with the women’s Platform dive.
WAC Championships: Men’s 500 Freestyle
UNLV’s Chris Mykkanen swam the fastest 500 free during the morning session with a 4:21.86, which will now count as a conference championship since the prelims are counted as timed finals after the water break.
Grand Canyon’s Mikhail Lyubavskiy took second in 4:23.23, followed by Air Force’s Wen Zhang (4:23.39) and UNLV’s Hayden Hemmens (4:23.41).
