2020 Western Athletic Conference Championships: Air Force, Northern Arizona Lead; UNLV Sets Mark

The 2020 Western Athletic Conference Championships opened on Wednesday from Houston.

The opening session consisted of relays and diving. The Air Force leads the men’s meet after the first day, while Northern Arizona leads the women’s meet.

Western Athletic Conference Championships: Women’s 200 Medley Relay

New Mexico State won the 200 medley relay to open the meet. Maude Boily-DuFour, Ashley Reynolds, Reagan Nentwich and Neza Koeijan won in 1:39.94.

Cal-State Bakersfield was second as Tahea Mose, Linny Sohoel-Smith, Autum D’Arcy and Mikayla Popham finished in 1:40.38.

Northern Arizona’s Sarah O’Connor, Hope Williams, Elisa Rodriguez and Miranda Nichols finished third in 1:40.82.

Western Athletic Conference Championships: Men’s 200 Medley Relay

Air Force opened the men’s portion of the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay.

Isaac Gwin, Zach Nelson, Aaron Pang and Matthew Lattin won the race in 1:25.71.

UNLV’s Ogri Maric, Jack Binder, Bryan Chavez and Richard Szilagyi finished second in 1:26.51.

California Baptist’s Jacob Leahy, Sean Foster, Josh Walters and Matthew Niculae finished third in 1:26.89.

Western Athletic Conference Championships: Women’s 1-Meter Diving

Northern Arizona took the top two spots in 1-meter diving as Jenny Cheetham won the title with 297.70 points. Teammate Emily Sharrer finished second with a score of 279.95.

Grand Canyon’s Sara Lameiro Castellanos was third with 263.60, followed by Northern Arizona’s Emily Luberto (256.90), giving NAU a 1-2-4 finish.

Grand Canyon’s Pietro Hufnagel Toscani won 3-meter diving with 358.40 points.

Air Force’s Cole Armagost was second with a score of 338.10, followed by Wyoming’s Brendan Byrnes (305.15), the third diver to reach 300 points.

Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay

UNLV’s Ogi Maric, Bryan Chavez, Christopher Mykkanen and Hayden Hemmens won the men’s 800 free relay in 6:20.44, breaking the WAC record.

Air Force’s Wen Zhang, Isaac Gwin, Corey Shepard and Jaykob Williams took second in 6:26.78.

Cal State Bakersfield’s Kristopher Rogic, Loren Gillilan, Ryan Brimer and Alex Dragan finished third in 6:27.86.
