2020 Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 3: Sheridan, Nelson, MacNeil Cruise to Top Seeds

The 2020 Big Ten Women’s Championships kicked off Day 3, with a full slate of events for the prelims session.

The 100 butterfly opened Friday morning’s swims at the University of Iowa Aquatic Center.

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 100 Butterfly

Michigan sophomore Maggie MacNeil surged to the top seed in the 100 butterfly, leading a trio of Wolverines in the top eight. She touched the wall in 50.55, breaking the Iowa pool record.

Senior Vanessa Krause took the fourth seed (52.50), while sophomore Olivia Carter took the fifth seed (52.59).

Penn State’s Madison Hart took the second seed in 51.64, followed by Northwestern’s Miriam Guevara (52.37).

Iowa’s Kelsey Drake and Penn State’s Madison Ledwith tied for the sixth seed with swims of 53.30 and Minnesota’s Tevyn Waddell took the eighth seed in 53.34.

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 400 IM

Northwestern’s Calypso Sheridan took control in the 400 IM, earning the top seed in 4:04.40.

The time was two seconds slower than her seed time but more than a second ahead of the field.

Ohio State’s Kathrin Demler took the second seed in 4:08.69. Her seed time was a second and a half faster than Sheridan’s which should set up an interesting showdown tonight.

Indiana’s Noelle Peplowski took the third seed in 4:08.89, followed by Michigan’s Victoria Kwan (4:09.58), Indiana’s Mackenzie Looze (4:09.67), Ohio State’s Kristen Romano (4:10.16), Indiana’s Bailey Kovac (4:11.22) and Northwestern’s Ally Larson (4:11.80).

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 200 Free

Indiana freshman Cora Dupre took the top seed in the 200 free, swimming a 1:44.53. It was a half second faster than Ohio State sophomore Georgia White, who finished in 1:45.09.

Northwestern’s Krystal Lara took the third seed in 1:45.46, followed by Iowa’s Hannah Burvill (1:45.59), Michigan’s Chloe Hicks (1:45.66), Ohio State’s Lucija Jurkovic Perisa (1:45.67), Indiana’s Maria Heitman (1:45.88) and Iowa’s Allyssa Fluit (1:45.93).

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 100 Breaststroke

Ohio State freshman Hannah Bach dropped three seconds from her seed time to take the top seed in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 58.76.

Michigan senior Miranda Tucker, the favorite in this event, took the second seed in 58.84.

Indiana freshman Emily Weiss has the third seed at 59.02, followed by Northwestern’s Sophie Angus (59.14), Indiana’s Noelle Peplowski (59.17), Minnesota’s Lindsey Kozelsky (59.30), Northwestern’s Hanna Brunzell (59.33) and Ohio State’s Hanna Gresser (59.55).

Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson took the top seed in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in 50.97, which was close to her season-best 50.05.

It was more than a second and a half ahead of the field

Northwestern’s Krystal Lara took the second seed in 52.60, followed by Indiana’s Grace Hackett (52.77), OSU’s Rebekah Bradley (52.84), Penn State’s Madison Hart (52.90), Northwestern’s Emma Lipisova (52.93), Rutgers’ Tereza Grusova (52.93) and Minnesota’s Emily Cook (53.12).
