2020 Big Ten Women’s Championships: Maggie MacNeil Nears 100 Fly NCAA Record

The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team compete on the third day of the 2019 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Bloomington, IN, Feb. 22, 2019

The 2020 Big Ten Women’s Championships continued on Day 3, with a full slate of events and several teams battling in the scoring.

The 100 butterfly opened Friday night’s swims at the University of Iowa Aquatic Center.

There were some big swims by Maggie MacNeil, Beata Nelson, Miranda Tucker and Calypso Sheridan, but Ohio State has the lead.

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 100 Butterfly

Michigan sophomore Maggie MacNeil was very near an NCAA record in the 100 butterfly, winning the event in a Big Ten Meet and pool record 49.42. It was just fourth hundredths of a second off Erika Brown’s NCAA record set earlier this week.

The Wolverines went 1-2-4 as Olivia Carter went 51.57 to take second and Vanessa Krause was fourth in 52.27, just behind Penn State’s Madison Hart (51.80).

Northwestern’s Miriam Guevara took fifth in 52.34, followed by Minnesota’s Tevyn Waddell (52.65), Iowa’s Kelsey Drake (53.14) and Penn State’s Madison Ledwith (53.75).

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 400 IM

Northwestern’s Calypso Sheridan won the 400 IM, putting together an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:03.18.

Ohio State took the next two spots as Kathrin Demler was second (4:05.93) and Kristen Romano was third (4:07.72).

Indiana’s Mackenzie Looze was fourth in 4:08.79, followed by Michigan’s Victoria Kwan (4:09.92), Indiana’s Bailey Kovac (4:11.16), Northwestern’s Ally Larson (4:12.36) and Indiana’s Noelle Peplowski (4:15.17).

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 200 Free

Indiana freshman Cora Dupre earned a one-second victory in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:43.61.

Ohio State’s Georgia White was runner-up at 1:44.63, ahead of two Iowa Hawkeyes, Hannah Burvill (1:45.36) and Allyssa Fluit (1:45.82).

Indiana’s Maria Heitman was fifth (1:46.05), followed by Michigan’s Chloe Hicks (1:46.13), Ohio State’s Lucija Jurkovic Perisa (1:46.35) and Northwestern’s Krystal Lara (1:46.53).

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 100 Breaststroke

Michigan senior Miranda Tucker dropped more than a half second off of her morning time to claim the Big Ten title in the 100 breaststroke. She touched the wall in 58.15 to break the Iowa pool record.

Indiana freshman Emily Weiss was second at 58.78, followed by Minnesota’s Lindsey Kozelsky (58.81).

Indiana’s Noelle Peplowski was just behind at 58.91, followed by Northwestern’s Sophie Angus (58.96) and Hanna Brunzell (59.24), and Ohio State’s Hanna Gresser (59.60) and Hannah Bach (1:00.26). Bach had the top seed from the morning at 58.76.

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 100 Backstroke

Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson won the 100 backstroke as expected, but her 49.85 time was a head-turner. Nelson was close to her 49.70 mark leading off the relay on Thursday, which was the pool record.

Rutgers sophomore Tereza Gruzova finished second at 52.31, a huge race for Rutgers.

Northwestern’s Emma Lepisova was third at 52.36, followed by teammate Krystal Lara (52.54).

Ohio State’s Rebekah Bradley was fifth (52.67), followed by Penn State’s Madison Hart (52.78), Minnesota’s Emily Cook (53.16) and Indiana’s Grace Haskett (53.17).

Purdue’s Emily Bretscher surged to the 3-meter diving championship with 356.75 points to win by 20 over Minnesota’s Joy Zhu (336.60).

Ohio State’s Mackenzie Crawford was third (334.45), followed by Michigan’s Nikki Canale (327.35), Nebraska’s Sara Troyer (315.40), Northwestern’s Markie Hopkins (308.35), Iowa’s Samantha Tamborski (280.25) and Illinois’ Taylor Shegos (261.90).

200 Free Relay

Ohio State’s Taylor Petrak, Freya Rayner, Amy Fulmer and Lucija Jukovic Perisa won the 200 free relay in 1:27.57, holding off Michigan by three hundredths of a second.

Michigan’s Maggie MacNeil, Daria Pyshnenko, Miranda Tucker and Vanessa Krause took second in 1:27.87.

Indiana was third (1:28.37), followed by Northwestern (1:28.70).
