2019 Phillips 66 US National Championships Day 1 Prelims: Held, Smith, Weitzeil, Urlando Take Top Seeds

The 2019 Phillips 66 US National Championships opened on Wednesday morning from Stanford with four events.
The meet will open with the 200 butterfly, followed by the 100 freestyle. The women’s 800 freestyle and the men’s 1500 freestyle will start with slower heats in the afternoon before finals.

Regan Smith picked up right where she left off at worlds, putting together a solid performance to take the top seed in the 200 fly to open nationals.
Smith, swimming for Riptide, cruised to the top seed in 2:09.04.
Smith set the world record in the 200 backstroke and 100 backstroke at worlds.
Lillie Nordmann finished with the second seed in 2:09.21, followed by Dakota Luther (2:09.49), Katie Drabot (2:09.53), Megan Kingsley (2:09.73), Olivia Carter (2:10.12), Emily Large (2:01.13) and Taylor Pike (2:10.34).
Top-seeded Hali Flickinger did not swim the event.

Men’s 200 Fly
Smith wasn’t the only teen to start nationals with a strong race.
Luca Urlando, 17, took the top seed in the men’s race in 1:55.55 and will look to add a national title to his already growing resume tonight.
Tom Shields — nine years older than Urlando — has the second seed in 1:56.12.
Louisville’s Nicholas Albiero has the third seed in 1:56.91, followed by Michigan’s Miles Smachlo (1:56.95), Trenton Julian (1:57.18), Bowen Gough (1:57.23), Justin Wright (1:57.40) and Brooks Fail (1:57.42).

Women’s 100 Free
Cal’s Abbey Weitzeil looked strong in her first swim of the national championships, swimming the 100 free in 53.47 to take the top seed by more than a second.
Catie DeLoof took the second seed in 54.67, followed by Tennessee’s Erika Brown (54.75).
A three-way tie for the fourth seed featured Nashville Aquatic’s Gretchen Walsh, Athens Bulldogs’ Natalie Hinds as well as Linnea Mack (54.78).
Allison Schmitt took the seventh seed in 54.91, followed by Cal’s Isabel Ivey (54.97).

Men’s 100 Free
Ryan Held wasted no time putting his mark on the 2019 Phillips 66 US National Championships, breaking the U.S. Open and meet record in 47.43.
The previous record was held by Jason Lezak (47.58) set in 2008.
Maxime Rooney was also extremely fast this morning, swimming a 47.75.
Tate Jackson took the third seed in 48.12, followed by Harvard’s Dean Farris (48.21), Robert Howard (48.37), Daniel Krueger (48.66) and Bowe Becker (49.21).
