The final morning session of the TYR Pro Swim Series in Santa Clara, Calif., featured action in the 400 free as well as the 50s of each stroke. Katie Ledecky was the top seed in the women’s 400 free, while Stanford teammate Simone Manuel took the top spot in the women’s 50 free.
As for Caeleb Dressel, he was first in the 50 fly heats but did not swim in the 50 free.

Women’s 400 Free
Katie Ledecky cruised to a 4:04.06 in prelims to earn the top seed for finals. She could make a run at a sub-4:00 effort in the finals session after swimming a 3:57.94, the second-fastest time in history, at the last stop of the TYR Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis last month.
Tucson Ford’s Leah Smith, the silver medalist behind Ledecky at last summer’s World Championships, qualified second in 4:07.50, and St. Petersburg’s Melanie Margalis took third in 4:10.87. Swim Ontario’s Kennedy Goss was fourth (4:14.21), followed by Ledecky’s Stanford teammate Katie Drabot (4:14.58) and York YMCA’s Courtney Harnish (4:!6.12).
Riptide’s Regan Smith, already the winner of both backstroke events and the runner-up in the 200 fly in Santa Clara, turned in a seventh-place time of 4:16.75, and she was followed by Mission Viejo’s Ashley Neidigh (4:16.86) and Mexico’s Ayumi Macias Alba (4:19.61).

Women’s 50 Fly
Cardinal’s Kelsi Dahlia posted the top time in the 50 fly prelims to head into the three-round shoot-out in finals. Dahlia swam a time of 26.24 to beat out Cal teammates Farida Osman (26.54) and Katie McLaughlin (26.83). Swim Ontario’s Penny Oleksiak, the Olympic silver medalist in the 100 fly, took fourth in 26.93.
Team Elite’s Hellen Moffitt finished fourth in 27.00, followed by Swim Ontario’s Maggie MacNeil (27.07), Tiger Elite’s Haley Black (27.32), Team Elite’s Sarah Gibson (27.34) and Stanford’s Katie Drabot (27.40).

Caeleb Dressel, already with wins in the 100 fly and 100 free in Santa Clara, cruised to a 23.59 in the 50 fly prelims to easily top Phoenix Swim Club’s Giles Smith (23.82) and Tiger Elite’s Luis Martinez (23.87). NCAP’s Jack Conger also broke 24, qualifying fourth in 23.94.
Team Elite’s Marcus Schlesinger (24.25), King’s Roman Rybin (24.31), Team Elite’s Marius Kusch (24.38), Longhorn’s Tripp Cooper (24.39) and Swim Ontario’s Alexandre Perreault (24.40) also made the final.

Canada’s Kylie Masse, the world record-holder in the 100 back, recorded the top prelims time of 28.01, and Club Wolverine’s Ali DeLoof was right behind in 28.42. Athens Bulldog’s Olivia Smoliga, who set the American record in the 50 back (27.43) at the last Pro Swim Series shootout in Mesa, Ariz., qualified third in 28.69.
Cal teammates Keaton Blovad (28.84) and Amy Bilquist (28.88) were fourth and fifth, respectively, followed by Aquajets’ Isabelle Stadden (28.89), Team Elite’s Caroline Baldwin (29.15), Mexico’s Fernanda Gonzalez (29.24) and Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson (29.30).

Coming off impressive wins in both the 100 and 200 back, Cal’s Ryan Murphy recored the top prelims time in the 50 back at 25.45, He finished five hundredths ahead of Tucson Ford’s Matt Grevers, and Swim Ontario’s Javier Acevedo was third (25.72). Cal’s Daniel Carr (25.73) and Team Elite’s Ryosuke Irie (25.92) also broke 25.
Cal teammates David Puczkowski and Jacob Pebley tied for sixth in 26.00, ahead of HPC-Vancouver’s Markus Thormeyer (26.17) and Pleasantville’s Destin Lasco (26.42).

South Korea’s Park Tae Hwan turned in a time of 3:52.51 to top the 400 free prelims, ahead of Gator Swim Club’s Mitch D’Arrigo (3:53.26) and Mission Viejo’s Zane Grothe (3:54.49).
Other finalists will include Mexico’s Ricardo Vargas Jacobo (3:55.18), Stanford’s True Sweetser (3:55.60), North Texas Nadadores’ Jack Levant (3:56.01), Stanford’s Grant Shoults (3:56.31), Longhorn’s Clark Smith (3:56.53) and South Korea’s Koo Kiwoong (3:58.58).
UPDATE: Gator’s Jan Switkowski posted a 3:54.47 in the B-flight to finish fourth and knock Koo out of the A-final, pending scratches.

Lilly King wore a practice suit for her 50 breast prelims race, but it didn’t stop her from qualifying first in 31.61. She and Mexico’s Melissa Rodriguez (31.97) were the only swimmers to crack 32 in the morning session.
Annie Lazor took third in 32.23, followed by Lakeside’s Kennedy Lohman (32.93) and Santa Clara Swim Club’s Jordan Morgan (32.94). Also qualifying for the final were Stanford’s Kim Williams (33.03), Aquajets’ Jordan Wentzel (33.03), Stanford’s Grace Zhao (33.13) and Athens Bulldog’s Danielle Della Torre (33.40).

Athens Bulldog’s Nic Fink touched out Tiger Elite’s Kevin Cordes in the final heat of the 50 breast to capture the top seed for the final. Fink swam a time of 27.66, followed closely by Cordes in 27.74 and Longhorn’s Andrew Wilson in 27.97.
Cal’s Connor Hoppe finished fourth in 28.04, ahead of Chuck Katis (28.18), Tiger Elite’s Miguel De Lara Ojeda (28.28), Indiana’s Ian Finnerty (28.29), Sandpipers’ Cody Miller (28.35) and Pavel Romanov (26.38).

Stanford’s Simone Manuel stormed to a 24.92 in prelims to edge out the 25.08 that Cal’s Abbey Weitzeil put up in the previous heat. Finishing just behind that duo was another Stanford swimmer, Lia Neal, in 25.41. Cal’s Katie McLaughlin (25.55) and SwimMAC’s Madison Kennedy (25.57) were close behind.
Also qualifying in the top nine were Cardinal’s Kelsi Dahlia (25.66), Cal’s Farida Osman (25.67), Club Wolverine’s Catie DeLoof (25.69) and Cal’s Amy Bilquist (25.74).

With top seed Caeleb Dressel scratching, Cal’s Nathan Adrian posted the top time in the 50 free prelims. Adrian, who was 15th in the 100 free prelims before winning hte B-final in 48.99, recorded a time of 22.39 to edge out teammate and No. 2 seed Michael Jensen (22.56).
Michael Chadwick qualified third in 22.63, with Indiana’s Zach Apple (22.83), Team Elite’s Meiron Cheruti (22.87), Longhorn’s Tate Jackson (22.90), Tennessee’s Kyle Decoursey (22.90), Josh Fleagle (22.95) and Swim Ontario’s Oleksandr Loginov (22.98) also making the top heat.
