Women’s 50 Free

NCAA Record: 22.71 – Elizabeth Carlton, Kenyon (2009)
2016 Champion: 22.77 – Emma Paulson, St. Thomas

Williams junior Emma Waddell opted out of the 200 IM for the first time at this meet and it paid off. Waddell claimed her second National Championship Title after winning the 100 fly as a freshman in 2015. Her time of 22.69 was enough to break the NCAA Division III meet record and claim top honors in this event. It was a late surge in the last 15 meters that got Waddell to the wall first.

She was followed closely by Fiona Muir who repeated as the runner-up in the event but this time a few one-hundredths faster in 22.74. Defending-champion Emma Paulson took third in 23.09. Emory also scored fourth-place points from Marissa Bergh who swam a 23.29.

Trinty’s Lindsay Hagmann took the consolation final in 23.29 and was followed closely by Emory’s Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe in 23.34. Emory now has a 39-point lead over second-place Williams who is having a great night of competition on day one.
