In the final session in Omaha, four athletes should be named to the Olympic team in the final two events of the meet.
Clark Smith qualified in seventh for the 1500 with a 15:17.10, just ahead of eighth place prelims finisher Chris Wieser in 15:17.51. Smith does not appear on the finals heat sheets, however. With his scratch, ninth place finisher Logan Houck (15:17.51) of the Sandpipers of Nevada moves into finals.
While Smith finished in the top six in Tuesday’s 200 freestyle final, his spot on the Olympic team is not yet confirmed. Despite a rough NCAAs, he still is the American record holder in the 1000 yard event, giving a strong indication of his distance potential. Earlier in this week’s 400 freestyle final Smith took the race out quickly and wound up fifth.
