Texas Longhorns Hook Pair of 2021 Verbals from Riley Courtney, Channing Hanley

NEW COMMITS: The University of Texas has scored a pair of verbal commitments for the 2021-22 season and beyond from Riley Courtney of Scottsdale, Az. and Orinda, Calif. native Channing Hanley.

Both swimmers will arrive in Austin as members of the Longhorns’ class of 2025 along with Ava Collinge, Jordan MorganMorgan Brophy,  Ellie Andrews and Olivia McMurray.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am SUPER excited to announce my commitment to pursue my academic and swimming career at the University of Texas! I am beyond grateful for the support of my family, friends, and coaches over the years. I can’t wait to become a part of the longhorn family!!”

Courtney, who owns four Junior National cuts, does her club swimming with Scottsdale Aquatic Club and most recently placed sixth in the 200 IM and eighth in the 200 breast at the Arizona Senior Open. She raced four events at Juniors West in December and earned gold in the 200m breast at Des Moines Futures last summer.

Her best times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:03.883
  • 200 breast – 2:15.69
  • 200 IM – 2:03.02
  • 400 IM – 4:23.62

A current junior at Chaparral High School, Courtney is a six-time Arizona DI State Championship finalist, winning the 100 breast in 2017. The two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American has also raced at the Arizona Meet of Championships each of the last three years.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m honored to be joining such an amazing program with a history of greatness in and out of the pool. Hook ‘em!!”

Hanley swims year-round with Orinda Aquatics and has achieved a pair of Summer Junior standards. She registered four new best times at Carlsbad Sectionals and competed in the 100/200 breast combo at Juniors this past short course season. Last summer, she took 10th in the 200m IM at Far Westerns and raced at Junior Nationals.

Her best times include:

  • 50 breast – 29.95
  • 100 breast – 1:02.86
  • 200 breast – 2:16.65
  • 200 IM – 2:05.21

Also competing for Campolindo High School, Hanley is a three-time CIF North Coast Section Championship finalist. The two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American placed 11th in the 100 breast at the CIF State Championships as a sophomore while taking 16th in that event during her rookie campaign.

Under head coach Carol Capitani, the Longhorns won their eighth-straight Big 12 team title in 2020.
