On night six of Olympic swimming in Rio, Michael Phelps earned a historic fourth straight Olympic gold in the men’s 200 IM. He did not stop there though, returning to the pool a half hour later to qualify for finals of the men’s 100 butterfly.
In between his events was arguably the race of the night. World record holder Cate Campbell led the 100 freestyle final at the halfway mark. In the final 25 meters Campbell faded while Simone Manuel and Penny Oleksiak blew by the Australian and tied for gold. The two tied for the Olympic record while also taking down the American and Canadian records, respectively. Oleksiak also lowered her own World Junior record.
In the first event of the night the reigning Olympic champion Florent Manaudou qualified first in the 50 freestyle.
Rie Kaneto of Japan took home gold in the women’s 200 breaststroke while Yulia Efimova settled for silver.
Ryan Murphy continued an American backstroking legacy, claiming the nation’s sixth straight gold medal in the 200 backstroke. Katinka Hosszu once again led the way, tonight in semifinals of the women’s 200 backstroke.
