The 100 free is generally one of the most stacked events in any pro series meet or championship meet.

That was the case Saturday at the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series in Santa Clara. Olympians, national champions and All-Americans were all over, so much that several of the top names in women’s swimming didn’t even make the final.

Simone Manuel won the 100 free in 53.85, edging former Stanford teammate Lia Neal (54.05).

Canada’s Penny Oleksiak took third (54.23), followed by Katie McLaughlin (54.79), coming off a win in the 200 fly earlier in the night, and Katie Ledecky (55.23) coming off a win in the 800 earlier in the night, Abbey Weitzeil (55.58), Catie DeLoof (55.61), Lili Ibanez Lopez (55.78) and Gabby DeLoof (56.47).

I grew up swimming competitively in Detroit area, and swam with several African-Americans. But I have heard too many stereotypical comments about their swimming abilities, over the years, so I am always thrilled when Simone and Lia do well! Brava, great swimming, women!
