Ruta Meilutyte Dashes To First in Prelims of 50 Breast at 2015 FINA World Championships

Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania claimed the top seed in the women’s 50-meter breaststroke with a stunning time of 29.74 effectively lowering her 2015 best of 29.88 from the Canet stop of the Mare Nostrum circuit. Meilutyte’s time secures her spot as the current top leader in the world, as she also holds the world record at a 29.48.

Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson took the second-place seed with a 30.27, lowering her time of 30.54 from the Charlotte stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series.

Jennie Johansson of Sweden moved up in the rankings with a time of 30.30. This lowers her 2015 best of 30.64 by .34 seconds.

Jessica Hardy of the USA turned in a 30.44 for the fourth-place seed, improving upon her time of 30.61 from the Charlotte stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series.

Russia’s Yuliya Efimova finished second in her heat to claim the fifth-place seed with a 30.45. This is just shy of her 2015 best of 30.37 from the Santa Clara stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series. Close behind was Ukraine’s Mariia Liver who followed Efimova to the wall with a time of 30.60.

Belgium’s Fanny Lecluyse turned in a 30.75 for the seventh-place seed, while Finland’s Jenna Laukkanen clocked a 30.79 to complete the top heat for semi-finals.

The Netherland’s Moniek Nijhuis (30.81), Italy’s Martina Carraro (30.83), Canada’s Rachel Nicol (30.86), Italy’s Arianna Castiglioni (30.90), Israel’s Hrafnhildur Luthersdottir (30.90), China’s Ran Suo (31.12), Czech Republic’s Petra Chocova (31.21) and Australia’s Lorna Tonks (31.22) complete the top sixteen for tonight’s semi-finals.
