Rikako Ikee of Japan leads the 50-meter fly after prelims with a sizzling time of 26.50. Ikee added slightly to her seed time of 26.28, a time that is quicker than the championship meet record of 26.32 set by Svetlana Chimrova in 2013. Look for Ikee to challenge that time in semi-finals.

Penny Oleksiak of Canada posted a finishing time of 26.85 to snag third. The top three qualifiers were the only three below the sub-26 second mark.

Australia’s Lucia Lassman finished fourth overall in prelims with a time of 27.11. Lasagna was followed closely to the wall by China’s Wang Jingzhuo who touched with a time of 27.18 from the same heat.

Szonja Szokol of Hungary grabbed sixth overall with a time of 27.21 from heat six.

Russia’s Polina Egorova and Australia’s Gemma Cooley tied for seventh in prelims with a time of 27.24.
