NCAA Division II Championships, Night 1: Nova Southeastern Women Obliterate 800 Free Relay

It’s no exaggeration to call what Nova Southeastern did Tuesday night to begin the NCAA Division II Championships a quantum leap.

Before the Sharks hit the water at SPIRE Institute, the NCAA record in the 800 free was 7:12.56. Nova Southeastern went ahead and lopped four seconds off that mark.

It’s an emphatic start to the Sharks’ title defense in Geneva, Ohio, Nova winning by more than seven seconds over the field and advancing the standard in the event by leaps and bounds.

On the men’s side, the University of Tampa opened with a victory in the 800 free relay to kick off the five-day meet.

Women’s 800 freestyle relay

What can you say about Nova Southeastern here? The Sharks set the NCAA record of 7:12.56 at their conference championships last year. They set the meet record in the event in winning in 7:13.65.

And then Tuesday, they just blew both of those times to smithereens. Three of the swimmers are the same – Emilia Ronningdal, May Lowy and Emily Trieschmann. Sophomore Rafaela Raurich is the new swimmer this year, on the third leg. Trieschmann anchored in 1:45.74, the only split reliably captured by the live results. She is the top seed in the individual event, with Ronningdal second and Raurich sixth. The NCAA record is 1:44.44.

Most frightening about this swim? Two juniors and two sophomores. Look out.

Colorado Mesa finished second in 7:15.54, a second off their time from conferences. Drury was in third.
