NCAA Division II Championships, Day 4 Finals: Outside Smoke Delivers Gwen Bergum, Jacob Hamlin Titles
The NCAA Division II Championships can be a long slog. With an extra distance race and up to four individuals available, that makes for a lot of extra swims. A prelim or two can get away from you.
And depending on the caliber of swimmer you are, that might not matter.
Friday delivered a lesson in that, with the outside lane of Lane 2 at the Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville delivering titles to seventh-seeded Gwen Bergum in the women’s 100 breaststroke and Jacob Hamlin in the men’s 500 freestyle. The latter has helped set the stage for what could be a famous final day, with 2.5 points separating Drury and Tampa – and 60 points blanketing the top four teams – on the men’s side of the draw.

Women’s 500 freestyle
Justice Beard built on her title in the 1,000 free by winning in 4:48.09. She took control within the first 100 and never let it go, her winning margin more than 2.5 seconds. The Missouri St. Louis swimmer was fourth last year before capturing the school’s first national title this week.
Nova Southeastern cashed in by Hailey Williams finishing second in 4:50.63 and Emilia Ronningdal third in 4:51.11. That stretches the Sharks’ team lead to 72.5 points.
Colorado Mesa’s Olivia Hansson was fourth, with Hanna Sasivarevic seventh. The winner of the B final, Jessica Dreghici of Simon Fraser, was quicker than the fifth-fastest swimmer in the A final, her teammate Abigail Andrews.

Men’s 500 freestyle
Make it two titles this week for Jacob Hamlin, two career titles in the 500 free and two NCAA records. After setting the NCAA record in 4:14.62 last year, he went 4:15.35 this time around. Instead of a six-second margin of victory, he was pushed this time around, with Findlay’s Sebastian Camacho Gomez second in 4:15.92.
With Barnabas Fluck in seventh, Tampa moves to the lead six points up on Drury.
Indy’s Swann Plaza was third in 4:17.63. His teammate, Jan Schmidt, was fourth-fastest on the night, though it was from the B final for ninth. Matteo Vissotto took fourth place overall in 4:21.14 for Drury.

Women’s 100 backstroke
Agata Naskret’s NCAA records include one last year on the way to the championship at NCAAs, one this season for West Florida, a 51.24 off the front of the 400 medley relay and then the 50.91 that she absolutely blasted to win the race. She was 3.5 seconds ahead of the field as the first D2 swimmer to break 51 seconds.
After Naskret’s dominance was a muddied mess. Second was Vittoria Porietti of Grand Valley in 54.60. Sidni Meister of Tampa was third in 54.68. Three other swimmers broke 55 seconds, led by Sophia Leo of Concordia, though her fourth-place time was slower than what Delta State’s Kennedy Cleasant used to win the B final.

Men’s 100 backstroke
It’s 3-for-3 for Maurice Grabowski, who added the 100 back title to his 100 fly and 50 free golds. The Lynn senior went 45.78, the clear winner by more than a half second over the field.
Though Drury, which moved back into the lead by nine points, won’t feel hard done. Alvaro Zornoza Quiros went 46.34 for second place for the second straight year. Ivan Adamchuk, last year’s winner, was third in 46.45. Teammate Evaldas Babakinas stepped up to win the B final from 11th in prelims.
Tampa mitigated it with Rufus Bernhardt tying for fourth in 46.47 (with Carson-Newman’s Gabriel Morales), with Will Beckstead-Holman sixth.

Women’s 100 breaststroke
It’s outside smoke, chapter 2: Gwen Bergum was just seventh in prelims in 1:01.89, then sped up to 1:00.91, the only one to break the tyranny of the 1:01s to win gold from Lane 2.
Bergum was followed by seven 1:01s in the A final and three in the B final. Natalia Dwojak of Wingate was second in 1:01.14, up from fourth last year. A tie for third knotted Celina Schmidt of Indy and Alena Rozova of West Florida. Rozova was the eighth seed out of prelims; Annika Luce of Wingate was the top seed from the morning but slid to eighth in 1:02.30.
Nova Southeastern got Zsofia Kurdi in sixth in 1:01.80.

New year, near Indy swimmer atop the podium, this time sophomore Jeremias Pock for his third title of the meet, complementing the IM sweep. Pock went 51.59, downing the meet record but .01 off his NCAA mark from February. He got one heck of a push from Lynn’s Maxim Tsyfarov, who went 51.83 as Knights tighten their grip on fifth place in the team standings. Pock was third and Tsyfarov fourth last year, the top two returnees.
Drury’s Joao Nogueira was third in 52.45 with teammate Elliott Weber seventh to move 30.5 points up on Tampa. William Slowey of Rollins finished fourth in 52.97.

Women’s 200 butterfly
In her 10th career top-10 finish at NCAAs, after six runner-up finishes for Findlay this week, Emily Mears-Bentley and the Oilers finally have the program’s first national title. The senior won in 1:58.93, pulling away in the final 100. She held off the Drury duo of Maria Fe Munoz, second in 1:59.25, and Rianne Rose, third in 1:59.36.
Mears-Bentley was just .05 up on Rose at the midway point, with Tampa’s 400 IM Burlingtyn Bokos champ third. Mears-Bentley and Fe Munoz had the two fastest third 50s to go to the lead, and Mears-Bentley had enough to hold of Fe Munoz’s 31.48 coming home.
Bokos slipped to seventh in 2:00.33. Six swimmers broke two minutes. Nova Southeastern’s Viktoriia Kostromina was fourth in 1:59.46.

Men’s 200 butterfly
Volodymyr Gavrysh completed the impressive 200 free-200 fly double by going 1:42.52 to win by six tenths. He was third last year.
Rollins’ Luke Dinges finished second in 1:43.14. Last year’s silver medalist, Lynn’s Vitaly Kostin, was third in 1:44.66, .22 up on Florida Tech’s Akos Hajagos. Tampa cut the deficit to Drury in the team race led by Nicholas Cavic in fifth and Joshua Noll in eighth, though the Panthers’ Belhassen Ben Miled won the B final (in a time that was even with Hajagos). The top seed from prelims, Gabriel Morales of Carson-Newman, finished seventh.

Men’s 3-meter diving
Santiago Santodomingo has a gold medal to go with his lyrical name, the Delta State junior scoring 622.75 points to win by nearly 50 points. Colorado Mesa’s Ryan Campbell was second. Max Wasiniak of Wayne State was third, up a spot from last year, in 553.00, while Donovan McMahon of Indy was fourth.
Colorado Mesa’s march to a top-three finish could be all about the divers. The Mavericks went 2-5-6-8 yield, led by Campbell’s score of 571.90. That’s 55 points, with Indy’s McMahon the only other scorer among the team title contenders.
Clarion’s diving dynasty was undone by a bad morning. Zakary Kennedy, who was third last year, won the B final, the Golden Eagles going 9-10-11-12. Ethan Coronado, sixth last year, was 11th. Michael Flamm, fifth last year, was 12th. Kennedy’s consolation final score would’ve been fifth in the championship final. Zachary Schering had the eighth-highest score of the night.

Women’s 200 freestyle relay
Last month, Nova Southeastern set the NCAA record in the 200 free relay, mincing .01 seconds off Queens’ record from 2019.
Friday night, the Sharks took a meat cleaver to the record.
Zsofia Kurdi, Kristina Orban, Maxine Egner and Maya Esparza went 1:29.03, breaking their relay mark by 1.01 seconds nearly skipping 1:29 altogether in a virtuosic performance. It means the Sharks end the night 65.5 points up on the field.
The Sharks were second at the first handoff, with Indy throwing 50 free champ Kirabo Namutebi to the front. She went 22.33 to start it. But Orban retook the lead with a 22.10, and two more sub 22.2 splits followed.
Indy, last year’s champ, was second in 1:30.43. Tampa finished third in 1:31.28, the position Nova Southeastern was in last year. Delta State was fourth with Findlay fifth, Troie Grubbs’ 22.16 split jumping them up five spots on the anchor.
Drury was ninth, which would’ve been a blow in its quest for a top-3 place, if not for its nearest chaser Colorado Mesa finishing 10th.

Men’s 200 freestyle relay
Tampa went 1:17.36 to win the final relay of the day, the difference .01 seconds over Colorado Mesa worth six points that might prove massive in the team race. Tibor Tistan, Riccardo Pandin, Nicholas Cavic and Will Beckstead-Holman got their hand to the wall first. Cavic’s 19.11 flat start was the second-fastest of the race, with only fifth-place Florida Southern anchor William Neville at 19.08 quicker.
Behind Colorado Mesa’s 1:17.37 with Drury third in 1:17.76. Indy was fourth.
Grand Valley State, last year’s champion, was 11th. Northern Michigan, second last year, was sixth.
