Women’s 100 butterfly

The first leg of Kristina Orban’s double was quickly handled, the Nova Southeastern sophomore leading wire to wire in a winning time of 52.79 seconds. It’s a second slower than last year’s winning time, and Orban was .02 slower than she was in the morning.

That mattered little when she got her hand to the wall three tenths up on Findlay’s Emily Mears-Bentley, who went 53.14 to improve on her fourth-place finish from prelims. She was fourth last year.

Wingate freshman Mathilda Sandberg finished third in 53.56, a tenth up on Lynn’s Lydia Douthit. The third seed from the morning, Tehani Kong of CSU East Bay, slipped to sixth. She had been third last year.

The B final had a faster winner in Zinna Nimander of Delta State, who went 53.95. That would’ve been fifth in the A final.

Men’s 100 butterfly

Speaking of fast B finals … it took everything Maurice Grabowski had to beat the torrid pace set by B final winner Elias Noe of Indy. Grabowski is the NCAA champion in 45.34, just a tenth up on Findlay’s Camillo Marrugo Montano. Grabowski was 16th in prelims last year and 10th in finals.

But the second fastest time came from Noe. He entered as the 16th seed, blistering the B final from an outside lane in 45.43. That was .04 up on Marrugo Montano. Noe’s time was quicker than the 45.85 that won last year. Still worth only nine points in the team standings, though.

Carson-Neuman’s Gabriel Morales finished third in 46.26, two tenths up on Tampa’s Will Beckstead-Holman. Tibor Tristan was sixth.

Women’s 200 freestyle

What’s better than two ones for Kristina Orban Thursday night? How about a 1-2 for Nova Southeastern. Orban won the 200 free in 1:46.34, retaining her title from last season, albeit four tenths slower (though she didn’t have the 100 fly on the front end as a freshman last season.) Making things better was teammate Emilia Ronningdal finishing second in 1:46.82. The 200 IM champion edged Lucy Hedley’s Grand Valley by .06 seconds.

The Sharks maximized their point return with Maxine Egner winning the B final in 1:48.22 and Hailey Williams finishing 11th to stretch the lead over Tampa to 49.5 points.

Drury’s Maria Morales was fourth. Colorado Mesa had Ada Qunell finished sixth and Hanna Sarsivarevic eight.

Men’s 200 freestyle

Volodymyr Gavrysh fired off a 1:32.40 off the front of the 800 free relay to set the NCAA record. He followed with a 1:32.50 to earn a national title. In the process, he deposed last year’s champ Jacob Hamlin, who secured second in 1:33.10. Hamlin had won last year in 1:33.38 with Gavrysh second.

Guillaume Guth of CMU was third in 1:33.48. There was more than 1.5 seconds back to Catawba’s Maksymilian Minichowski in fourth at 1:35.04. Drury went 5-8 in the A final, with Matteo Vissotto (fifth for the second straight year) and Lucas Minuer. In between was Daniel Meszaros of Florida Southern, up a spot from last year in sixth, then Tampa’s Joshua Noll.

Indy finished ninth and 11th in the B final.

Women’s 3-meter diving

A year ago, Clarion went 1-2-4-5 on 3-meter.

This year, 1-2-3-6 will have to do.

Colleen Hudson became the latest Golden Eagle to win 3-meter diving at NCAAs. She was third in prelims with 460.15 points, then ran away from the field at night with a tally of 512.45.

Sophomore Taelyn Thomas finished second in 498.00, rising from sixth in prelims. Two-time champ Luna Vejarano was third with a score of 495.95, 1.15 points ahead of Kenya Meyer of Colorado Mesa. Clarion’s Kaitlyn Madigan was sixth.

It’s the fourth straight year that a Clarion diver has won this event. Vejarano won in 2023 as a freshman with Alexa Gonczi ninth. Gonczi won in 2024 with Vejarano third (and Madigan and Hudson fifth and sixth). Vejarano was first, Gonczi second, Hudson fourth and Madigan fifth a year ago.

Colorado Mesa was the big winner in the team competition, with Meyer fourth. The Mavericks finishing 4-8-10-11-13 to nab 43 points.

Women’s 400 medley relay

It’s two records for the price of one for West Florida, the Argonauts resetting the relay record and seeing Agata Naskret lower her 100 back record off the front. Naskret went 51.24, trimming .02 off her NCAA record (and changing the school designation on her meet record set last year with Colorado Mesa). Alena Rozova, Livia Rodrigues and Sofija Kendzior went 3:35.21 to win and get the record.

The record had been 3:35.70, holding since 2019 in the hands of Queens. Colorado Mesa (with Naskret) won the race last year in 3:37.54.

The Argos were 11th as a team last year in 3:44.45, before the transfer of Naskret and the addition of freshman Rodrigues. Rozova and Kendzior were on last year’s quartet.

Indy was second in 3:38.03, Celina Schmidt splitting a picturesque 1:00.00 in breaststroke. Wingate was third, two tenths up on Nova Southeastern in possibly their weakest relay without Kristina Orban (though Zsofia Kurdi was 48.36 to be the fastest of the anchors). Colorado Mesa jumped into third place in the team standings by finishing sixth. Tampa was seventh, while Drury was a distant 11th.

Men’s 400 medley relay

It’s a national record for the University of Indianapolis, the quartet of Camille Trinquesse, Jeremias Pock, Elias Noe and Zachary Anthony going 3:06.12. That clubs more than a half-second off Drury’s record of 3:06.75 from last year, with three teams under the old mark.

Drury was also there in 3:06.54. The Panthers led by three tenths at the midway point, but Noe’s 45.55 took the edge by four tenths for Indy. The anchors were a push, Anthony at 42.79 for Indy and Yuri Cabral 42.80 at Drury.

Lynn was third in 3:06.65. They were 1.4 seconds back when Maurice Grabowski got in the water and cannoned his way to a 41.49 relay split.

Tampa was fourth in 3:08.37. Colorado Mesa was fifth. McKendree was just eighth.
