The 2018 Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Championship Trials are officially underway at the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre in Adelaide, with Australia’s best swimmers fighting for a spot on their country’s Pan Pacific Games roster. The first day of the meet featured just two events: the men’s 800 freestyle and the women’s 1500 freestyle, but that doesn’t mean it was a quiet night in Adelaide.

Men’s 800 Freestyle

23-year old Jack McLoughlin continued his amazing 2018 by opening the meet with a win in the 800 free in 7:54.25. That is just over a second off of his best time and put him ahead of Olympic gold medalist Mack Horton once again this summer.

The two kept it incredibly close through much of the race, with Horton actually holding a slight lead through most of the first half before McLoughlin started flipping first around the 400. The two stayed within tenths of a second through the 700 meter mark, when McLoughlin made a move to put more distance between them. Horton would finish in 7:56.05, while Joshua Parrish would join them under 8:00 in 7:59.91.

McLoughlin is coming off an incredible Commonwealth Games where he won gold in the mile (14:47.09) and silver in the 400 free (3:45.21). Horton, for his part, was the bronze medalist in the mile and gold medalist in the 400 free at this year’s Commonwealth Games and is the defending Pan Pac silver medalist in this event from 2014.

Women’s 1500 Freestyle

Kiah Melverton made history in the women’s 1500 freestyle, becoming just the second Australian woman to swim the event in under 16:00. Second place finisher Kareena Lee nearly broke through the sixteen minute barrier as well (16:00.14), and was battling back and forth with Melverton throughout the whole race.

In third place was 19-year-old Madeleine Gough (16:09.11). Notably, Ariane Titmus, the newly minted Australian record holder in the 400 free, finished 4th in 16:09.87, while Australian record holder Jessica Ashwood was back in 7th in 16:42.75.
