Lilly King, Beata Nelson Share Big Ten Weekly Honor; Tysoe Too

Indiana University women’s swimming and diving senior Lilly King was named the Big Ten Women’s Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday, the league office announced. King shared the weekly award with Beata Nelson of Wisconsin.

This past Wednesday, King helped the No. 6-ranked Hoosiers earn season-opening wins over No. 14 Kentucky, No. 15 Missouri and a tie against No. 18 Notre Dame.

The Evansville, Ind., native won both the 100 breaststroke (59.74) and 200 breaststroke (2:11.63) with NCAA B cut times. King, the three-time defending NCAA champion in both events, posted the fastest mark in the nation in the 100 breast.

King also helped the Hoosiers win the 200 medley relay at the season-opening quad meet with a time of 1:39.09.

  • Earned three first place finishes last week against No. 14 Kentucky in the 100 breaststroke (59.74), 200 breaststroke (2:11.63) and 200 medley relay (2:05.79)
  • Recorded “B” cut times with her 59.74 100 breaststroke and 2:11.63 200 breaststroke finishes
  • Currently holds the fastest 100-yard breaststroke (59.74) for NCAA Division 1 women’s swimming
  • Earns her tenth career Swimmer of the Week honor and first of the season

Beata Nelson, Wisconsin

Jr. – Madison, Wis. – Verona

  • Placed first in all four events, 100 backstroke (52.57), 200 backstroke (1:54.76), 200 medley relay (1:41.23) and 400 freestyle relay (3:22.34), against Minnesota last week
  • Recorded “B” cut times in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke, ranking third nationally in both
  • Earns her second career a Swimmer of the Week honor and first of the season
  • Last Wisconsin Swimmer of the Week: Beata Nelson (Nov. 8, 2017)

Diver of the Week

Kristen Hayden, Minnesota

Jr. – Hillsborough, N.J. – Panther Creek High School

  • Finished first in both the 1-meter (291.45) and the 3-meter (308.70) against Wisconsin last week
  • Tallied NCAA Zone Championships qualifying scores in the 1-meter and 3-meter
  • Earns her first Diver of the Week decoration
  • Last Minnesota Diver of the Week: Sarah Bacon (Jan. 31, 2018)

Freshman of the Week 
Marie Schobel, Penn State

Sea Girt, N.J. – Manasquan

  • Finished in first place in both her individual races this weekend against George Washington: 100 backstroke (56.33) and 200 backstroke (2:02.32)
  • Earned first place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.51
  • Earns her first career Freshman of the Week award
  • Last Penn State Freshman of the Week: Madison Murtagh (Oct. 10, 2018)

Diver of the Week

Nick Yang, Minnesota

Sr. Chao Hu, China Chaohu No. 2

  • Won both the 1-meter (356.62) and 3-meter (421.88) diving events in a dual against Wisconsin
  • Posted NCAA Diving Zone qualifying scores in both events
  • Earns the second Diver of the Week award of his career and the first of the season
  • Last Minnesota Diver of the Week: Nick Yang (Jan. 31, 2018)

Freshman of the Week 
Max McHugh, Minnesota

Sturgeon Bay, Wis. Sevastopol High School

  • Recorded first place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.44) and 200-yard breaststroke (1:57.91) in his first collegiate meet against Wisconsin
  • Marked the sixth fastest 100 breaststroke time in the nation as well as the third fastest 200 breaststroke time, marking an NCAA B cut
  • Earns his first career Freshman of the Week award
  • Last Minnesota Freshman of the Week: Michael Messner (Nov. 4, 2015)
