Kalis Rasmussen Breaks 5 Masters World Records at Age 95

Kalis Rasmussen just keeps on going. Age can’t stop her from breaking barriers on a world stage.

While the U.S. Masters were competing this weekend in Arizona, this 95-year old broke five masters age group world records during the weekend at the Swim Ontario Masters provincials championships in Toronto.

Rasmussen, originally from Denmark, broke world records in the 200 breast, 50 breast, 100 back and 200 backstroke. She swims for the Etobicoke Olympium Masters Aquatic Club (EOMAC) Masters Swimming Club in Ontario.

“I was 8 when I started, then the war came,” Rasmussen told Breakfast Television, a Rogers Media station in Toronto. “I came to Canada in 1951. But I started swimming (competitively) in 2000.”

She swam a 2:42.88 in the 100 back, a 5:42.83 in the 200 back. She also swam a 7:22.30 in the 200 breast and a 1:32.51 in the 50 breast.

Rasmussen swims 3-4 times a week for about an hour, she said.

“I kind of train on my own,” she said.

Rasmussen is coached by Mirko Petrov, the president of the EOMAC club.

“When I started swimming masters, I was in my early 20s and she was old then,” Petrov joked on Breakfast Television. “Every year we travel. We went to Budapest a couple of years ago for the world championships. She won the world championships at age 89 in Budapest. She is just inspiring people everywhere she goes.”
