Women’s 400 IM

Katie Ledecky is having herself quite the meet as she already set a world record in the 1500 and swam the second fastest time ever in the 400. On Friday morning at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, she swam a 4:41.54 to lead the qualifiers in the 400 IM heats at the TYR Pro Swim Series.

She swam by Melanie Margalis (4:42.87) and Ella Eastin (4:43.36) in the freestyle leg as those three are the top seeds.

Penn State’s Ally McHugh (4:43.61) and Vietnam’s Vien Nguyen (4:43.63), as well as Hali Flickinger (4:43.72), Brooke Forde (4:44.36) and Allie Szekely (4:44.85) will also swim in the A-final tonight.

Men’s 400 IM

Georgia had a good showing in the heats of the 400 IM on Friday morning as Jay Litherland swam to the top seed with a 4:22.03 just ahead of Louisville’s Daniel Sos (4:22.71). Cal’s Sean Grieshop is the third seed at 4:24.18.

Reigning World Champion Chase Kalisz did not take a hard stroke his last 200 as he cruised in to a very comfortable 4:24.76. He has been as fast as a 4:08 this year already so he could dip down that low tonight.

Carson Foster (4:25.25), Gunnar Bentz (4:25.43), Charlie Swanson (4:26.16) and Clayton Forde (4:26.79) placed in the top eight after the A-flight heats.

Women’s 50 Free

Stanford’s Simone Manuel and future teammate Taylor Ruck were the only women to break 25 seconds on Friday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series meet in Indianapolis. Manuel is the top seed for tonight at 24.89 and Ruck is the second seed at 24.99.

Those two are just ahead of Mission Viejo’s Margo Geer who is on a bit of a comeback trail herself. Geer is the third seed tonight with a 25.00.

Kelsi Dahlia (25.37), Kayla Sanchez (25.38), Mallory Comerford (25.54), Olivia Smoliga (25.58) and Veronica Burchill (25.80) also placed in the top eight after the A-flight.

Men’s 50 Free

NC State’s Justin Ress sprinted to the top seed in the 50 as he swam a 22.36 just ahead of Indiana’s Ali Khalafalla (22.46). Ress has been a swimmer on the rise the last 12 months after he made the World Championship team last summer, won a couple gold medals at the World University Games, and was an integral part in NC State’s relays this past March. Ress could snag a couple relay spots later this summer as he is now a well-known name in the swimming circles.

Speaking of well known names, three-time Olympian Nathan Adrian (22.54) is the third seed going into tonight. He had a good showing last night in the 100 free and could get down to a sub-22 again tonight.

Aaron Greenberg (22.88), Ryan Held (22.96), Adam Chaney (23.10) and Blake Pieroni (23.23) also placed in the A-flight’s top eight. Gus Borges snuck into the A-final after a 23.21 in the B-flights. He did the same thing in the 100 free yesterday, sneaking into the A-final after swimming in the B-flight.

Women’s 200 Back

Kentucky’s Asia Seidt (2:11.69) cruised to the top seed and will have a bit of a battle tonight in the 200 back final at the TYR Pro Swim Series meet at Indianapolis. Seidt is just barely ahead of Kennedy Goss (2:11.71) and Erin Voss (2:11.74).

Texas A&M’s Lisa Bratton (2:12.57) is just ahead of Canadian teenage sensation Taylor Ruck (2:12.89) and US National team member Olivia Smoliga (2:13.72).

Ali Galyer (2:13.94) and Allie Szekely (2:14.25) round out the top eight from this morning.

Men’s 200 Back

Cal’s Jacob Pebley has a chance to toot his own horn tonight without training partner and reigning Olympic champion Ryan Murphy in the field. Pebley cruised to the top time in the 200 back heats with a 1:59.67 as he was the only swimmer under two minutes in Indianapolis.

Pebley is well ahead of the rest of the field as three swimmers behind him swam 2:02’s. Grigory Tarasevich (2:02.29), Nicolas Albiero (2:02.71) and Carson Foster (2:02.96) are all right there together going into tonight.

Alex Boratto (2:03.27), Matt Grevers (2:03.51), Jacob Steele (2:03.76) and David Fridlander (2:04.49) also placed in the top eight after the A-flight.

Women’s 200 Free

Katie Ledecky cruised in the heats of the 200 free which was her second event of the morning so far on this lovely Friday. Ledecky swam a 1:57.00 to have the top seed ahead of Melanie Margalis (1:57.94). Those two are head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the field as third was Simone Manuel at 1:59.47.

The rest of the field is very strong as it looks like it’s going to be a very tough path to get on the 4×200 free relay at the end of the summer at the Pan Pacs in Japan. Mallory Comerford (1:59.55), Leah Smith (2:00.03), Allison Schmitt (2:00.05) and Katie Drabot (2:00.41) all have a chance to get on the team in that event at the end of the summer.

Canada’s Rebecca Smith (1:59.79) is also in tonight’s A-final as the fifth seed.

Men’s 200 Free

Michigan’s Felix Aubock was the only swimmer to break 1:50 on Friday morning in the heats of the 200 free at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis. Aubock swam a 1:49.15 to lead the qualifiers into tonight’s final. He is ahead of a pair of IU swimmers Zane Grothe (1:50.03) and Blake Pieroni (1:50.06).

Gunnar Bentz (1:50.35) and Norbert Szabo (1:50.35) tied for fourth place.

The US is desperately looking for some relay spots on the men’s side for the 4×200 free relay as they lost the last two World Championship titles to Great Britain and don’t have the luxury of Michael Phelps anymore.

Guys like Jay Litherland and Ryan Held as well as Grothe, Pieroni and Bentz could help fill that void. Litherland (1:50.54) and Held (1:50.87) made it to tonight’s A-final. Marwan El-Kamash is the eighth seed after the A-flights at 1:51.17.
