ISL Match Six Day Two: Haughey, Szabo, Shymanovich Scare World Records as Energy Standard Wins Comfortably

ISL Match Six Day Two Live: Energy Standard in Tussle With Toronto Titans

The second day of the sixth match of the International Swimming League featured defending champs Energy Standard against expansion team Toronto Titans as Energy won its first match of the season. The New York Breakers and Aqua Centurions fought for playoff position in third and fourth place with the Breakers picking up an extra point. Energy Standard was notably without Sarah Sjostrom and Max Litchfield in this match but showed out well with Siobhan Haughey and Ilya Shymanovich scaring individual world records on the day.

Haughey was the match MVP with her two wins while Florent Manaudou and Kylie Masse won the Skins events in their desired strokes.

Szebasztian Szabo and Danas Rapsys also notably broke ISL records on Monday in the 50 fly and 200 freestyle respectively.

The next ISL meet will be November 5 – 6 with London Roar, Tokyo Frog Kings, Cali Condors and New York Breakers in a doubleheader lined up with Energy Standard, DC Trident, Toronto Titans and Team Iron.

Women’s 100 Free

ISL record: 51.02, Cate Campbell, Emma McKeon, London Roar

Energy’s Siobhan Haughey got the day started with a 51.30 to win the 100 freestyle, just off her Asian record she set yesterday of 51.14 as her teammate Femke Heemskerk, making her ISL debut this season, finished in third. New York’s Kasia Wasick placed second for the Breakers.

Men’s 100 Free

ISL record: 45.22, Caeleb Dressel, Cali Condors

The Aqua Centurions got some much-needed points from Alessandro Miressi and Marcelo Chierighini finishing 1-3 with the Italian touching at 46.27 as Chierighini was leading through 75 meters. Toronto’s Blake Pieroni slipped into second to try to close the gap on Energy.

Women’s 200 Fly

ISL record: 2:03.12, Suzuka Hasegawa, Tokyo Frog Kings

Boglarka Kapas swam a well-paced race to take the 200 fly from lane 1 with a 2:06.15 as she proved why she is the reigning World champ in this event as she led a 1-2 finish with Breakers teammate Svetlana Chimrova. Energy’s Zsuzsanna Jakabos placed third as the Breakers are closing the gap on the Titans for second place.

Men’s 200 Fly

ISL record: 1:48.77, Daiya Seto, Energy Standard

Chad Le Clos put the pedal to the metal on the last 50 of the 200 butterfly as he had plenty left in the tank to win at 1:50.57, running down Aqua’s Leonardo De Deus who led through 150 meters. Le Clos’s teammate Kregor Zirk snuck into third place ahead of New York’s Michal Poprawa to extend their lead over Toronto. Le Clos jackpotted seventh and eighth place.

Women’s 100 Back

ISL record: 54.89, Minna Atherton, London Roar

Kylie Masse lowered her season best to win the 100 back at 56.14 as she led a 1-3 finish with Lisa Bratton to give some valuable points for the Toronto Titans. Energy’s Emily Seebohm placed second as Masse looks primed to go for the backstroke Skins at the end of the session.

Men’s 100 Back

ISL record: 49.50, Guilherme Guido, London Roar

Shane Ryan allowed the Titans to sweep the 100 backs with a 50.45 in a minor upset over Energy’s Evgeny Rylov. Ryan jackpotted seventh and eighth place with his dominating win as Matt Grevers placed third for Energy Standard.

Women’s 100 IM

ISL record: 57.74, Sarah Sjostrom, Energy Standard

Energy Standard continued the momentum with a win from Anastasiya Shkurdai at 58.34 as she jackpotted sixth, seventh and eighth place with her swim. Energy’s Mary-Sophie Harvey placed third as New York’s Abbie Wood continued her strong ISL season with a second place finish in the 100 IM.

Men’s 100 IM

ISL record: 51.27, Caeleb Dressel, Cali Condors

Florent Manaudou won his first event of the day with a 51.49 in the 100 IM as Michael Andrew gave him everything he had to finish second at 51.64. New York’s Joe Litchfield finished in third as Manaudou picked up an extra point via the jackpot rule.

Women’s 200 Free

ISL record: 1:51.67, Siobhan Haughey, Energy Standard

Siobhan Haughey scared the world record in the 200 freestyle as she was within a few tenths of Sarah Sjostrom’s world record from 2017, and won with a 1:51.42. Sjostrom’s 1:50.43 will stand another day but it may not last much longer. She jackpotted the last five swimmers in the field with her ISL record as Rebecca Smith and Femke Heemskerk were the only swimmers to keep their points.

Men’s 200 Free

ISL record: 1:41.58, Alexander Graham, London Roar

Danas Rapsys broke the second ISL record on the day with a 1:41.23 to lower Alexander Graham’s record from last year. Rapsys had a dominating win ahead of New York’s Felix Aubock and Toronto’s Blake Pieroni as Energy Standard looks like they will not be beat with nine events to go.

Women’s 50 Fly

ISL record: 24.74, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Team Iron

Maddy Banic had a strong showing in the 50 fly with a 24.97 using her strong turn to beat New York’s Arina Surkova as she jackpotted the last three swimmers in the race, with Anastasiya Shkurdai in third for Energy Standard.

Men’s 50 Fly

ISL record: 21.96, Szebasztian Szabo, Aqua Centurions

Szebasztian Szabo dropped a tenth on his ISL record with a 21.86 as he inched closer to the world record of 21.75 by Nicholas Santos from 2018 as he dominated the race out from lane eight for the Aqua Centurions. New York’s Michael Andrew finished second ahead of Energy’s Chad Le Clos as Szabo jackpotted the rest of the field.

Women’s 100 Breast

ISL record: 1:03.00, Lilly King, Cali Condors

15-year-old Benedetta Pilato took the second win on the day for Energy Standard teenagers in ISL match six with a 1:03.89 in the 100 breast, running away from the rest of the field on the final 25. Toronto’s Kelsey Wog picked up second while New York’s Molly Renshaw and Aqua’s Martina Carraro tied for third place.

ISL record: 55.92, Adam Peaty, London Roar

Ilya Shymanovich was out under world record pace in the 100 breast with a 55.86 for the final time, as Cameron van der Burgh’s 55.61 will stand another day. Shymanovich jackpotted seventh and eighth place as his teammate Felipe Lima placed third to continue to pile on the points for Energy Standard. Aqua’s Nicolo Martinenghi finished in second.

Mixed 4×100 Free Relay

ISL record: 3:15.97, Energy Standard

Energy Standard used the depth of their sprinters to take the mixed free relay with Evgeny RylovSimonas BilisSiobhan Haughey and Femke Heemskerk taking the win at 3:16.99. The Toronto Titans finished in second as the Aqua Centurions, who led at the 200, finished in third.

Women’s 400 IM

ISL record: 4:24.15, Melanie Margalis, Cali Condors

Tess Cieplucha, making her ISL debut after four years at Tennessee, won the 400 IM with a stellar freestyle leg at 4:27.86, just off her season best. New York’s Abbie Wood, one of the ISL’s hottest swimmers this season, finished in second after leading at 300 meters, while Energy’s Zsuzsanna Jakabos was third.

ISL record: 3:54.81, Daiya Seto, Energy Standard

Max Stupin won the 400 IM in Max Litchfield’s absence with a 4:04.76 to jackpot seventh and eighth place as he pulled away from Brandonn Almeida of New York on the freestyle leg with Aqua’s Philip Heintz placing third.

Women’s Skins Backstroke

Toronto’s Kylie Masse swept all three rounds of the backstroke Skins race as she out-dueled long-time rival Emily Seebohm of Energy Standard as Masse kept the medley relay winners undefeated in the Skins races.
