Indiana, Michigan Swim to Split in Big Ten Showdown

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 3/14 Indiana University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams and the  No. 4/2 Michigan split their dual meets on Thursday afternoon at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind.

The No. 3 Indiana men’s team (6-0) defeated No. 4 Michigan (5-1), 173.5-126.5.

The No. 2 Michigan women (6-0) beat the No. 14 Hoosiers (2-3-1) 172-128.

The win for the Hoosier men marked the team’s 28th-straight dual-meet victory, the last defeat coming against Michigan in 2016. The victory for IU men is the team’s fifth over a top-25 opponent this season and the third against a top-10 squad – No. 1 Texas, No. 4 Michigan and No. 8 Florida.

For the Indiana men, Zach Apple won the 100 freestyle (43.58), Mohamed Samy won the 200 free (1:35.24), Andrew Capobianco won 3-meter dive (486.00), James Connor won 1-meter dive (409.80), Gabriel Fantoni won the 100 backstroke (46.51), 200 backstroke (1:45.44), Ian Finnerty won the 100 breaststroke (53.25).

For the Michigan men, Ricardo Vargas won the 1000 free (8:57.08) and 500 free (4:23.68), Miles Smachlo won the 200 fly (1:46.01) and 100 fly (47.08), Gus Borges won the 50 free (19.99), Tommy Cope won the 200 breast (1:56.00) and 200 IM (1:46.55).

For the Michigan women, Rose Bi won the 1000 free (9:47.24) and 500 free (4:48.31), Siobhan Haughey won the 200 free (1:47.49), 200 IM (1:58.69) and 100 free (48.47), Maggie MacNeil won the 100 back (52.88) and 100 fly (51.70), Vanessa Krause won the 200 fly (1:50.08), Catie DeLoof wont he 50 free (22.51),

For the Indiana women, Lilly King won the 100 breaststroke (59.62), 200 breaststroke (2:11.57), Bailey Kovac won the 200 backstroke (1:58.16), Jessica Parratto won 3-meter dive (362.25), 1-meter dive (328.58)
