Australia topped the men’s 800-meter free relay after an impressive race with the United States and Great Britain. A slower starting leg from the United States’ Reed Malone (1:48.21) allowed for Grant Hackett (1:47.83) of Australia to create a solid lead for Australia. Michael Weiss (1:46.14) of the United States was able to catch and pass Kurt Herzog (1:47.96) to put the USA in a chance to win it, but Australia’s Daniel Smith (1:46.02) and Thomas Fraser-Holmes (1:46.59) had enough in the tank to grab the lead and finish in 7:08.40. Michael Klueh (1:47.67) and Conor Dwyer (1:46.53) were able to close the gap slightly, finishing .15 seconds behind Australia with a 7:08.55.
Great Britain’s relay team of Robert Renwick (1:47.43), Nicholas Grainger (1:47.19), Daniel Wallace (1:46.03) and Duncan Scott (1:48.35) took third in prelims with a final time of 7:09.00.
Germany was close behind with a time of 7:09.34 to position them in fourth for the up-coming finals, while Poland turned in a 7:10.20 for fifth.
The Netherlands (7:10.83), Russia (7:10.84) and Belgium (7:10.92) complete a close finals heat.
